I expect that Chris Kyle was probably politically to the right of where I am. But that is no reason for political opponents to use the occasion of his murder to make snarky comments about "no tears for a mass murderer" or "live by the sword, die by the sword" or calling him "scum". There are American soldiers who are alive today because of actions he took. And he died trying to help another veteran. Something is really wrong in the American politic when someone's death is occasion for political gotcha or insults. Right or left, it's not the thing to do. http://www.alternet.org/comments/news-am...e#disqus_threadhttp://www.salon.com/2013/02/04/gun_trolls_attack_mother_jones_editor_over_chris_kyle/http://www.khou.com/news/texas-news/Ron-...-189684761.html

The Troggs frontman Reg Presley dies at 71 Feb. 4, 2013, 5:11 PM EST
The Troggs frontman Reg Presley has died a year after retiring from music to concentrate on battling lung cancer. The "Wild Thing" rocker, 71, died at his home in Andover, England on Monday.
Presley's daughter Karen tells WENN, "He passed away peacefully at home, and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We're absolutely heartbroken." Presley was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of 2012 and announced his retirement in a post on The Troggs' official website. He wrote, "As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.
"However, I've had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years." As the leader of The Troggs, Presley enjoyed success throughout the 1960s with songs like "Wild Thing," "With a Girl Like You" and "Love Is All Around." He had a career rebirth in the mid-1990s when Wet Wet Wet's cover of "Love Is All Around" spent 15 weeks at the top of the British pop charts.
Presley was born Reginald Maurice Ball in Andover in 1941. Aside from being a musician, he also made a name for himself as an avid alien researcher who specialized in crop circles and signs of extra-terrestrial life on earth.

Oh yea, I remember The Troggs, though I wouldn't have remembered who the lead singer was. I have both "Love Is All Around" & "Wild Thing" on 45s (somewhere in MI). I did like (tho forgot about it, til I saw it in the post), "With A Girl Like You." The words/melody immediately popped in my head. RIP Reg Presley TIS

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/07/donald-byrd-dead_n_2639910.htmlLegendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd died earlier this week at the age of 80, but news of his death was only just confirmed. Amoeba reports that Byrd's nephew, Alex Bugnon, confirmed via Facebook that his uncle died on Feb. 4, adding that for an unexplained reason other family members were trying to keep the news of his death private. "I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family," wrote Bugnon. Byrd was born in Detroit in 1932, and was already an accomplished trumpeter by the time he finished high school. He later went on to play in a military band during his term in the United States Air Force, and then obtained a bachelor's degree in music from Wayne State University and a master's degree from Manhattan School of Music. His career began when he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, as a replacement for Clifford Brown, in the 1950s, and formed the fusion group The Blackbyrds in the early 1970s. According to Amoeba, Byrd was a "one of a kind trumpeter," who was known not just for his work in jazz, but also in R&B, soul and funk music, and it was his ability to transcend time and genre and remain relevant that sets his work apart from others.

Rick Huxley, who played bass in the '60s group The Dave Clark Five, died February 11 at age 72. While no official cause of death has yet been announced, Huxley suffered for years from emphysema brought on by heavy smoking. This leaves drummer/leader Dave Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson as the only surviving members of the group. BBC Obituary Legendary British makeup artist and designer Stuart Freeborn passed away February 5 at age 98. Largely self-taught, his career spanned more than half a century. He designed makeups for Oliver Twist (1948 version), Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the original Star Wars trilogy, and countless others. Wikipedia article R.I.P. to both of them. Signor V.

Aww, I use to love the Dave Clark Five (or at the time DC5). Mike Smith died just recently (a year or so?) didn't he or is time just flying by so quickly it seems like it? Anyway, sorry to hear it. TIS

Aww, I use to love the Dave Clark Five (or at the time DC5). Mike Smith died just recently (a year or so?) didn't he or is time just flying by so quickly it seems like it? I guess time is flying by all too quickly; DC5 lead vocalist Mike Smith died February 28, 2008 at age 64 following a back injury - just two weeks before the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Denis Payton died December 17, 2006 at age 63. Here is a March, 2008 photo of (l. to r.) Lenny Davidson, Dave Clark and Rick Huxley at the induction ceremony. I really liked their music, too. Liked it a lot. The really frustrating thing was that for a great many years, Dave Clark (who owned the rights to everything) refused to re-release any of their music to new audiences. Not until just a few years ago. Wikipedia article Signor V.

He was lead the singer on "My Bonnie" Wait, are you saying it wasn't the Beatles singing "My Bonnie?" I thought either Paul or John did lead vocals??? I liked that song. Btw SV, Dave Clark has aged pretty well no? He looks kind of the same. TIS

Legendary pianist Van Cliburn died today at age 78; the cause of death was bone cancer.
Also today, actor Dale Robertson passed away at age 89. Best known for Westerns, he starred in "Death Valley Days" and "The Iron Horse" on television.
