i might be a little bias but ray patriarca sr was the man from mid 50's until his death in 84 he was in the commision had casino's both in vegas and a.c. and dealt real closely withb meyer in havana .....had all the killers under his belt real closely dealt with politicions hands on and was deep in his pockets never was there an attempt on his life was a pure killer and great business man ...helped profaci by sending j.r. russo nicky bianco pop werner mad dog nazarene and more men to profaci for the colombo's war he was a man's man and he came with phrase of " love for your family is one thing but Love for this family is a deeper different type of love " and besides all i said and more excelling facts and information unsaid he did die in his bed peacefully ....in my opinion a strong argument for the greatest mob boss
raymond l.s.patrairca sr to u.s. state committee- " if i didnt have my case coming up ill to come back in here with two gentlemen and when this is over with and really lay down the law, yous guys been giving me nothing but alot of hookwhick and i wish i wasnt on trial and have this case and really tell the united states whats going on " Jerry Anguilo on wartime with winter hill - " If we got to war we got Joe Russo and the maverick boys so we have nothing to worry about they can go to vietnam and come back untouched "

I go with a tie between Carlo Gambino and Angelo Bruno
Proud to have been born and raised in South Philly 1976-1995

I go with a tie between Carlo Gambino and Angelo Bruno Bruno...failing to help his family capitalize on Atlantic City gambling has got to be a point against him. What exactly did he do anyway? I remember the Crime Inc documentaries more or less said he single-handedly destroyed the economy of Newark, which is something I guess, but can someone explain it to me?

Angelo Bruno was great! He stayed out of the drug world and basically liked typical rackets n bookmaking. It was smart of him not to get involved in the drug world n attract the DEA s attention. Buy establishing Atlantic City as "open territory" he made sure the Philly Mob didnt get into war w/ the Gambinios or other NY factions. RIP Bruno.
Loyalty is not a word, its a lifestyle.

In Sicily - Toto Riina, no doubt. In the US, probably Gambino.

In Sicily - Toto Riina, no doubt. Toto' Riina may have been great at conducting mafia wars, but in my opinion he sucked at maintaining contacts with politicians. He just wanted them to be his pet dogs. If they disobeyed, he killed them (see Salvo Lima). +1 on that, there were much smarter bosses in Sicily than Toto Riina,he wanted to kill everybody who went against him,or disobeyed. That's not way mafia should operate, after Toto Riina's violence state went in battle against them which led to a lot of bosses being arrested etc. For Sicily i would say Calogero Vizzini.

In terms of military power, I agree though Riina was the strongest. If Vizzini had been still alive in the 80s, he would probably have been whacked.

After reading the link in another thread earlier this morning, I change my vote to: Carlo Caputo of Madison, Wisconsin

Carlo Gambino run 4 out of five families with no jail time after become boss. I don't think he ran other families, but he could probably count on their vote on the commission if he needed them. This would make Carlo a defacto boss of bosses of sorts, to the extent he could control the majority vote. If he could count on Tommy Lucchese, Angelo Bruno and Joe Colombo to vote his way, this would give him an easy majority control of the commission.

Was he a capo out of Chicago? F White, I was referring to this link. If it is factually sound, then it is good stuff. This is where I got the idea to put up Caputo for best boss. I was really just joking. But who knows. Read it and see what you think. http://www.reocities.com/ocsmidwestmafia/madison.html

Accardo has dry snitch written all over him. Seems odd that for years that the feds were able to nail everyone under but him. In Roemer's first book he had several high placed CIs that he refused to name, the way Roemer had a man crush on Accardo, stands to reason Accardo could have been one of them. Or his importance was overblown, a respected elder but far from the Outfit bogeyman he was made out to be.
With that being said Phil Lombardo, under the radar boss, retired to Florida unindicted and passed away at home. there's a reason accardo was around the top of the syndicate for damn near 50 years and I highly doubt it was because he's a snitch paul ricca and tony accardo were problem the best tandem in mafia history both died at home in their beds without serving significant jail time

Carlo Gambino run 4 out of five families with no jail time after become boss. He only ran his own family he had allies as bosses of the Colombos (Colombo,Persico) and Luccheses (Lucchesse,Corralo). While he wasn't allies with the Bonnano's after Galante took over and supposedly from the early 60's when Bonnano was in charge. I've never heard of his relationship with Benny Squint i'm guessing he didn't know he was boss while he was Tieri's ally. I think it's highly exaggerated how powerful Carlo actually was he certainly didn't run any family other than his own. Yeah, while Gambino may have been the first among equals, and had a certain degree of influence over some of the other bosses, it's very much an exaggeration to say he "controlled" or "ran" the other families.
