Kly, I just realized/remembered he was with the Phillies before.. so I take it you're familiar with his, uh, skill set? MC, isn't it ridiculous? Our local station had a segment about how we're supposedly using the "Moneyball" method. I think I'll just refer to it as thrifty and patient. (VERY patient.) Astros might be building up. I doubt the owner is going to be like the asshole who owns the Miami Marlins. Then again you won't know for awhile what kind of owner he is. Unfortunately, the Astros have missed badly on talent evaluation for several years. But I understand that while their farm system doesn't exactly stand out, it's been better than it has been for some years now. gina could enlighten us more there. But as far as minor league systems go, five teams currently stand from the rest: 1. Cardinals (the undisputed strongest system), 2. Mariners, 3. Rangers, 4. Pirates, and 5. Rays. Not surprised with the cardinals because they do know how to run a team (and saved them selves from that pujols contract). By the way, Keith Law believes that the Cubs have the 5th best farm system and John Sickels has them 10th best. I honestly love where the Cubs are heading to. By the way, Klyd what do you think about Halladay's slow start/decline?

While he didn't have great command this Spring, he has shown flashes of his devastating slider. When he regains consistency in placing his pitches, he should be back. I just don't see enough offense coming from the Phils to keep up with the Braves and Nationals. Atlanta's lineup is fierce.

Unfortunately I don't keep up with the minor league system as much as I should, but I know a few of our big guys there are ranked well: Carlos Correa, Jonathan Singleton, and George Springer. All the trades we've been making lately were supposed to be with the intention of building up for the future, so I guess time will tell. My favorite news story of late was when our owner told fans to write him a check if they were going to keep complaining about the payroll. I'm actually totally for the patient approach, and it wouldn't be sensible to hold onto big-salary guys when we're not considered contenders, but his PR approach is ridiculous.

My preseason picks are as follows:
AL East: Tampa Bay Rays AL Central: Detroit Tigers AL West: Los Angeles of Anaheim Angels AL Wildcards: New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles
NL East: Washington Nationals NL Central: Cincinnati Reds NL West: Los Angeles Dodgers NL Wildcards: Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants
Honestly, I don't believe that the yankees will not make the postseason unless they make a really really big trade. Cincinnati will most likely choke or barely make the postseason by wildcard. I'm not sold on the Blue Jays at all even though everybody else is. Dickey was a good trade and Buerhele has pitched in the AL before so he knows what he's getting himself into. What about Josh Johnson? Can he stay healthy? How's his stuff going to translate to not only the AL, but the AL East? Melky Cabrera's off the juice (hopefully) so his numbers are going down the toilet. And how are Jose Reyes' legs going to hold up on that astro turf? Too many questions that need to be answered. Well that didn't take too long for prediction #1 to come true for Toronto. Jose Reyes injured his ankle yesterday and could out anywhere from 1-3 months

Where's my friend Gina?? The Astros beat my boys AND made them cry! And then told them to go home and tell their Mamas about it, that's how bad the beating was. Congrats to your team, Gina! And in NY no less!! So much for the Yankees home advantage! Where's my friend Gina?? The Astros beat my boys AND made them cry! SB how much were Yankees tickets back in the day? Were they affordable unlike today?

anybody been to any games so far this season?
I scored some great tix (15 rows behind first base) from a buddy of mine for last friday's mets vs nationals game when harper hit a few homers. Great time. I was at the Cardinals/Phillies game this past Sunday night. Four rows from the right field wall and about thirty feet from the foul pole. Nice, did you catch anything out there? Should we start a pool to pick a date when Robinson Cano gets hit with a huge suspension for taking banned substances? I am hoping this isn't true (prob is though, he is best friends with Arod and Melky), cause I am a big Cano supporter.
Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife? Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

A few years ago we discussed the then possible use of instant replay in baseball. Well, baseball blew a replay review where a hit, which replay convincingly showed should have been ruled a homer, was ruled a double after the game was halted so that the umpires could review it. The blown call prevented the A's from tying the game in the ninth.
Baseball acknowledged that the umpires were incorrect in their conclusion, but ruled that because it was a judgment call, it stands.
Normally I would agree that judgment calls, if shown to be erroneous later, should stand. However, where baseball has inserted the extreme option of instant replay to guarantee a proper outcome in certain situations, a higher standard should be employed, and the call should be reversed, allowing the game to be replayed from the point where the blown call is reversed.
