I would highly doubt he'd head back to NYC. This isn't Joe Bonanno we are talking about here, this is a BOSS who betrayed his family, sent a lot of guys to jail, and crippled the Bonannos. I would imagine there a lot of guys who'd want his head, even if only on principle.
