As far as WITSEC,it's a tough call. On the one hand you have Gravano,who betrayed Gotti,the supposedly hardcore, old school, ruthless, gangster. After appearing on talk shows to promote his book (having left the Program),and actually daring guys to come to Arizona to get him on television,he went about his business with no problem,until his drug arrest.Nobody gave a rat's behind (pun intended) about getting Sammy.

Henry Hill puts away Lucchese guys,goes on Howard Stern,writes a cookbook,gets openly drunk and vomits on the curb in front of clubs IN NEW YORK CITY and what? Squat.

Granted Massino is a higher ranking rat than most,but it wouldn't surprise me to see him on Piers Morgan. Christ,the guy might even get a reality show. Maybe him, Gotti Jr. and the Mob Wives could open a pawnshop.

The modern Mob could care less about going after rats,precisely because they're the Modern Mob. In days of yore,you had some sense of loyalty,and a lot less rats. Nowadays,the rats are like the Whack-a-Mole at Chuck E. Cheese. Hit one ,another pops up.

Ironically,Massino is credited with bringing the Family to it's greatest heights and for trying to return to the old school mentality. The fact that he failed in the latter part may be what saves his life.

You never know, the dipietro hit made me think twice about mob guys not killing rats. A LOT of guys in that life now a days have drug problems and enormous amounts of stress and can likely snap at any moment. I'm just saying, if your in that life now you have to be kind of crazy. Massino knows this. There are a million of young (stupid) wannabe's just in Staten Island just waiting to make a good impression. Anybody who has gone out on a Friday night in Staten Island can attest to this.

Moneyman,I had to laugh because you made a good point. I used to live out in Deer Park,and we had our share of cranked up, wannabe,chain wearing,IROC racing cugines. Everybody "knew people",and if you hit Deer Park Blvd on a Friday night you couldn't fling a cannoli without hitting someone who would jump at the chance to "do some work for the boys". It really is a different world now.

@Lou_Parra I had Deer Park exactly in mind. Anybody who has been in central booking for 6 hours thinks there a tough guy and can step up. I'm not exaggerating when you walk into certain bars/restaurants/night clubs in Staten Island odds are you will overhear some twenty something year old say how he made collections for Joe Schmo over the summer or how much weed he can sell in a week it's crazy. Anyways, any solid earners that have been on the street consistently obviously do not involve themselves with these kinds of jerkoffs.

But the point being there is probably one in a dozen of these types who would actually consider whacking a guy like Massino if he lived openly in the NYC area. Massino affected A LOT of people, remember it's not just the wiseguys you hear about in the paper. When a guy like that flips anybody so much within a ear shot of him shuts down (and thats a lot of people) i.e lots of money still on the table, countless friends and relatives who genuinely feel hate for this guy.

That being said I think Massinno will be in witness protection, way less effective witnesses have gone in.

As far as Casso goes there are plenty of prisons with medical facilities at them like Butner i think has one, Devlin, and MCFP Springfield(The United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners). No way they send a guy doing multiple life sentences at ADX Florence to any local CCM. I just can't figure this one out.

My guess is an illness that requires medical attention that can only be administered at that particular prison hospital.

Casso was briefly moved to Butner a couple of years ago when he had prostate(?) cancer. I had no idea that he had been transferred out of the Supermax though.
