Frank Lautenberg just died. He was the last surviving World War II vet in the Senate.

Something like this makes me feel old. When I was a kid I remember hearing about Civil War veterans celebrating a birthday. There are none left today (obviously) but now it's becoming increasingly rare to find a WWII vet alive.

Well you have seven or eight years on me, SC. But I know EXACTLY what you mean. Back in the '60s and '70s I remember seeing World War 1 guys getting together for talk shows or even parachute jumps. And they're ALL dead now .

I know that there are no known living American veterans of World War I, but can't be certain that's the case around the world.

My grandfather, who fought in WWI, died in 1969 before I turned 5. While in France he carved his name high up in the EiffelTower. When his oldest son, my uncle, made it to Paris in WWII months after he took part in the Normmandy Invasion, he followed his father's directions and found his name. My uncle then carved his name under his father's.

Never mind the last one died in February of last year

I think the number of WWII vets is dropping pretty fast.

RIP Deacon Jones, one of the best defensive players to ever play in the NFL. Was part of the LA Rams defensive line known as the "Fearsome Foursome". Just a great player.

Deacon was truly one of the NFL' all time greats. Like all the rest of that era, never tried for murder or arrested for domestic battery or DUI. Though I'm a Steelers fan, thanks for the memories Deacon.

Wow that's a name from the past. I know he was a sports person but couldn't tell you what sport/team. YET, I do remember the knitting incident. AND if I am not mistaken, wasn't Rosie the one who got the gun from Sirhan Sirhan when RFK was shot?

Yep Rosie served as one of RFK's body guards. When the motorcades went up and down the LA streets Rosie would hold Bobby in the car so the fans could not pull him out of it as a result of their enthusiasm.

Esther Williams died today. We were the proud owners of an Esther Williams swimming pool for years. She was 91.

Theres a picture of Greer holding Kennedy around the waist while RFK was shaking hands from a car with his supporters. Looked like they were having a tug of war with Kennedy as the rope. Can't find the pic but Rosie was always right behind or next to kennedy during that campaign in 68.




Also RIP Joey Covington who played drums for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. He was killed in a traffic accident on tuesday.

I didn't know (or I fogot) that Greer was an actual body guard of RFK. I thought he just happened to tackled Sirhan.

Sorry to hear about Jefferson Airplane drummer tho I can't say I'm familiar with members of the group except Gracie Slick.

Esther Williams I remember from way back as a kid, we'd watch her movies on the late show many times. The title that comes to mind is "Bathing Beauty." She was married to Fernando Lamas and is the mother of Lorenzo Lamas who was in a tv show a while back that I watched but I can't think of the name of it now. RIP Esther Williams.

Richard Ramirez aka The Night Stalker. He died of natural causes and was 53.

Wow, really? I'm surprised I haven't heard it.

I'll never forget the atmosphere at that time. We lived in Orange County and although most all of his crimes were in L.A. area, one of his murders was in Orange County. It was dead of summer, hot and with no air. My husband worked nights, and I was afraid to sleep with my windows open (that's how he was entering homes, thru open windows), let alone in my bedroom, so I slept on the couch. I actually had a vacuum cleaner part ready to attack just in case.

I'll never forget the applause of the crowd when he was captured. As we watched on tv, we see his battered/bandaged head from crowd attacks, as he was guided in the cop car.

The guy was downright creepy!!!

Everybody will remember him for THE SOPRANOS, but honestly his small (but memorable) part in Tony Scott's TRUE ROMANCE is what comes to my mind. He was also fun as the sadistic prison warden villain in THE LAST CASTLE.

Fun Fact: He was supposed to play the FBI agent character in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN originally.
