The Godfather, the novel, was put out in 1969; the film came out in 1972. At this time, a lot of the older generation Mafiosos were still alive or still active, like Carlo Gambino, Colombo, Costello, Joe Bananas, Neil Dellacroce, etc. Guys that went way back. We know that some of the then young turks like Sammy Gravano and Gotti loved The Godfather and it made them want to be in the Mafia even more than they already did....But how did the old timers feel, about the novel or the film?

Gambino banned his entire family from seeing the movie when it initially came out. Joe Colombo did as well. Everyone still saw it and loved it (Luca Brasi was a local Brooklyn guy who hung out at The Sinatra Club), but all the old timers apparently didn't want the attention it would obviously bring.

Joe colombo had some involvment with the godfather. Colombo founded the italian american civil rights league and through that was petitioning the godfather because it would paint italians in a bad way. The two sides negotiated and settled on some things like for example the word mafia was not to be said in the movie. Through out all of this there were colombo mobsters coming and going from the set which is how lenny montana got casted as luca brasi, he was a driver/bodyguard for a lot of senior Colombo mobsters.

Yea, and he married the widow of the biggest coke dealer in the history of Aspen. He was Jon Robert's distributor in and around Aspen. Steven Grabow. He was brutally murdered and as I understand it the dirt wasn't even cold yet before Cann was with this guys wife.
Caan offered something like a million cash to put up as collateral against Andy Mush's bail.

What a hypocrite. Gambino had even visited the shooting.

Caan was friends with Carmine Persico from whom Caan learned how to behave as a mobster.

Yes it is...it shows how the mob terrorized the staff and in the end they only had to change one sentance, when Jack Woltz yells at Tom Hagen “I don't care how many dago guinea wop Mafia greaseball goombahs come out of the woodwork!”And the meeting between Al Rudy and Joe Colombo took place in the Park Sheraton Hotel(where Anastasia got whacked),i think, wich i find it very funny.

Haha ya when i saw park sheraton hotel i first thought of that 2, its pretty comical that all that protest and threats all came down to removing on word. Also amazing how 1 of the most greatest movies of all time came about despite the very small budget and intial wariness of the studio to even make it, and if it wasnt for the fact that coppola "came cheap" and brando needed the work the film wouldve been a just a cheap adaption of a great book.
