I always imagined the families are essentially nameless, identified rather by the members, especially top tier positions, and who's connected to who...
Perhaps it's the [insert current boss] family? Just "the family"?

The Valachi-era names have been around so long, they've become common even within the mob itself; at least when they're referring to a family as a whole.
Mods should mind their own business and leave poster's profile signatures alone.

Joe Pistone said when Tony Mirra shook someone down, he told them to go and ask about "Tony from Mulberry street". The bar owner nearly shit himself when he heard who he was dealing with. I assume Mirra would have refrained from referring to himself as a Bonnano whoever he was talking to (other wiseguys included) incase of a wiretap
