There's been so much controversy over this I'm getting sick of it. Don't change the name! People are so damned thin skinned, it's a football franchise not anything that promotes hate or racism. Get over it you morons from Oneida nation.

I agree as well. Nothing offensive about it. I swear some people aren't happy unless they have something to bitch about.

How about the Houston Honkies; the New England Chowder Heads; the New York N*****s, the Detroit Dagos, the San Francisco fa***ts, the San Diego Wetbacks, just words.

The name isn't provoking or promoting any racism it's just an old football team name. It is possible for political correctness to be carried way too far. This is a perfect example

Daniel Snyder can spin it any way he wants. In the history of our country, "Redskin" was a derogatory term used by the "white man" when he was moving west. It was never a term used in a positive context. This is not a perfect example of political correctness.

As far as I'm concerned they can keep the name, just change the logo to a Redskin Potato.

Commissioner Roger Goodell met with representatives of various Native American tribes to discuss the impact of the slur, which has been promoted as the nickname of Washington's NFL team.

Goodell promised his full support in rectifying ongoing injustices directly resulting from the continued use of the derogatory term.

In a press release he said, "The NFL is committed to eliminating all racial, ethnic and social stereotypes, which are contrary to the enlightened standards of the league. And I will immediately convey this sentiment and our unequivocal condemnation of the use of the offensive image to Daniel Snyder, that hook-nosed heeb of an owner of the Washington franchise...and Happy Halloween to all."

Didn't the owner of the team say he is NOT changing it? ultimately its his team and his decision.

They also did a survey and I think it was 8 or 9 out of every 10 Native Americans did NOT find the name "redskins" offensive.

If the race that the term was used against do not find it offensive, then this argument is nothing more than a glorified pissing contest to distract the less intelligent away from the more serious issues facing our country.

What's next, PETA tries to change my Dolphins to the Red Snappers because the Dolphins find it offensive they are being used as a team and it violates their marine mammal rights?

If you change the name to Red Snappers, then you're opening a jar of pickles that is best left sealed.

Just to be safe, all team names should use inanimate (sp.)objects like furniture, tools, weather conditions, like the Chicago Fire, St. Johns Red Storm, Miami Heat, the Washington Monuments or even the New York Skyscrapers.

I dunno.

If you replace "red" with black, brown, or yellow......I think it would be offensive to people in those ethnic groups.

I sooooo hope Dan Snyder DOES NOT change the name. He should tell any whiny Indians and/or liberals to go pound sand. The name stays and that's that.

They should also change the name of Christmas to Winterville and Easter to BunnyFest!!

Not sports related I know, but this whole thread of political correctness has inspired me.

lol that made me laugh DT. But in my opinion this is just a football name, not anything that promotes racism. It's been in the NFL for 80 years. It's too classic to change

That's because you don't have any Indian in you. Some of us do. They could easily come up with a name.

Only because the Indian race is not what it was is the reason they can get away with it. If it was the Washington ni**ers we'd have a problem, but since the Indian race doesn't have the numbers it's ok. That logic is what sounds liberal.

Shows how much you know. The proper term isn't Indians they have nothing to do with India. Native American is what they are because they were here before anyone else was. And I know this contradicts your Mormon faith ivy but no they were not evil lol

I wouldn't care even if I did. The team has had the name for years and it's only becoming an issue now? And only because people are choosing to get bent out of shape and making it an issue.

I reject your "proper term" nonsense because it's another example of what this is all about in the first place - political correctness running rampant. And, for the record, they weren't here before anyone else and their history is what it is. But that's another subject.

Well if we're talking history Ivy you and I would probably disagree heavily. I majored in it and I'm certainly not of the belief that the earth is 6000 years old. But again, we will just leave at that.

I agree the name should not be changed. It's a stupid issue and Goodell shouldn't even bother with it. Even so, I hate Dan Snyder, the guys a blowhard, but I am with him on this one and hope he doesn't give into the pressure of changing the name.

Has another team in the NFL since the AFL -NFL merger ever changed the team name? Off the top of my head the only one i can think of is when the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Oilers for a couple of seasons before changing the team name to the Titans.

And of course there was that whole fiasco with the Browns when Modell moved the team to Baltimore but then the city of Cleveland got to retain the Browns name and "legacy" and Baltimore was then awarded the Ravens because years before that the Colts moved in the middle of the night to Indianapolis. I think i have that right....what a mess that stuff was.
