The person of the year is supposed to be whomever had the greatest influence on world affairs for better or for worse. That's why Hitler once got it, and its probably why Snowden was in contention.


Very true. It's not designed to be a celebration of the person(s), but recognition of the scope and weight of the effect, which the person(s) had on the news and world.

Pope Francis is an excellent choice. He is uniquely influencing religion, politics, economics and culture around the globe, and it is fascinating to consider what his papacy will accomplish in the coming years. He's making a lot of people uncomfortable, which is a good thing.
