A month or two late on this but I thought it would be interesting to post known memberships of each of the Five Families from 1963, around the Valachi hearings; 1988, 25 years after the hearings, and 2013, fifty years after the hearings. Now these will probably include some errors but remember that this is what the government knew, *at that time*. There may also be discrepancies in names, but I have tried to change as many as I could. There may also be some names of deceased members who have died, but their deaths may not have been known to the government at the time these membership rolls were released.

From 1963 to 1988, the estimated number of members decreased by 21.37%. From 1988 to 2013, it decreased by 30.77%. If this rate continues, by 2063 the family will have decreased by 40.31%, leaving approximately 81 members. By 2088, that number would have decreased by 58.05% to 34. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a crime family can be considered "extinct" once its membership drops lower than 25 (probably the lowest estimate for any currently "active" family). If these rates remain the same, the Genovese crime family will become defunct by 2106.
Just some food for thought.

Similar to what I mentioned in your Gambino thread, the more recent official estimate for the Genovese family is about 200 members. That was cited by the prosecution in the case against former acting boss Danny Leo. And the prosecution also cited 200 members in the case against former Gambino ruling panel member Danny Marino.

Ivy, see my post in the Gambino thread. Maybe I should change it to "known" members?
Yeah, I saw it and I figured that's what you meant. Obviously we mob watchers aren't going to be privy to all the names the feds have. And we haven't seen the feds release a full list of names in any of the NY families in a quarter century.

A new book is out detailing the rise of Vito Genovese, titled "the Deadly Don: Vito Genovese, Mafia Boss," by Anthony M. DeStefano. It details Vito's early days, his rise in the mob, his escape to Italy to avoid a murder case , friendship with Mussoliini's crowd, return and eventual rise to the top of the crime family that came to bear his name.
