Story from New York Post: The grandson of “Big Paul” Castellano, the former kingpin of the Gambino crime family, was arrested in Staten Island for illegal waste carting, authorities said. Paul Castellano, 39, named after his infamous mob-boss granddad, had been operating a waste removal business for the past seven years, hauling dirt and other materials from construction sites, without the required trade waste license. He was busted on Wednesday following a lengthy investigation by the Business Integrity Commission and faces hefty fines and up to six months in the slammer if convicted on the misdemeanor charge. Early Wednesday, an investigator saw one of Castellano’s employees loading waste onto a dump truck clearly marked with his company’s name, American Materials. The truck did not have the proper registration plates or trade waste license plates, a criminal complaint states. “I tried to get a license. They will never give me a license,” Castellano told investigators, according the criminal court complaint. “I didn’t want a denial on my record so I withdrew the application,” Castellano said. “I won’t do it again.” His grandfather, also known as the “Howard Hughes of the Mob,” was gunned down in 1985 after John Gotti ordered a hit on him. “Big Paul” will be played by actor Chazz Palminteri in the upcoming John Gotti biopic, “Gotti: in the Shadow Of My Father.”

I wonder how common this is in New York. I'll bet that quite a few waste management guys get popped without the right plates or licenses for commercial work.Apparently, the real crime is having the wrong last name. It's fairly common. I could post a fairly long list of mob-tied companies banned by the New York Business Integrity Commission just over the past decade. Every so often they will release a press release of other companies who have been denied an operating license. Of course, this doesn't totally stop the mob from being involved in the industries it oversees - waste hauling, food wholesaling, etc.

It's easiest to get caught at the weigh stations and at the transfer stations. Since the Feds started regulating the business those places are under constant scrutiny and surveillance. The Feds could pay off the national debt with the fines they gave out last year at the New York-Connecticut border alone .

Ivy, is there any indication that any of Castellano's sons or grandson had mob involvement after is death? Nothing specific that I'm aware of. The BIC will usually explain why the company has been denied in their press releases but I haven't seen anything about Castellano's company yet. Mikey Scars talks about it in his testimony...the transcript is easy to find
When Interpol?
