Here's a weird sports tradition from my neck of the woods.
There is a soccer rivalry between local colleges, Messiah and Elizabethtown. For several decades when they meet yearly, the fans of both schools throw marshmallows before, during and after the match at the players, coaches, officials and each other, as well as the film crew covering the game. The field is covered with thousands of marshmallows, making it look like a blizzard.
The tradition began when one team accused the other of being soft before a game, leading to the marshmallows being hurled at the accuser.

I will make this brief for my US pals. Rugby, great violent game, I love it. Two types of rugby. Union which is more popular and League which is better. The rugby league World Cup is currently being played in the UK and the USA have a team which qualified for the first time in it's history. May I present the Tomahawks (is that a politically correct name) who have won their first 2 games and qualified for the quarter finals, where they will play the mighty Australians who are rather good. Nevertheless the Tomahawks have won the hearts and minds of the rugby world and you should all be very proud of them!! I'm kind of fond of the nickname "Tomahawks," especially for a rugby team. I've tried to find tv coverage of this, but even the so-called Worldwide Leader in Sports, ESPN, doesn't know the Cup is being played. Maybe I missed it. I appreciate your updates on the tournament, Yogi.

Yogi, caught a bit of Rugby the other night, US v. New Zealand. Lots of fun, but I had no idea WTF they were doing. I didn't hear the name "Tomahawks" though. Bad breath could be a useful weapon. Hmmm, could be an old game MC, cos US have not played New Zealand in this World Cup. They have made it to the quarter finals and play the mighty Australians on Friday night(UK time). The other games are NZ v Scotland, England v France and Fiji v Samoa. I would put gamble my mortgage right now on it being an Aussie v NZ final. Don't tell me I got scrummed!? Those are some tough boys.

Did any of you know that Ted William's mother was Mexican? Williams addressed this in his autobiography. He spent time as a child with his grandmother, who didn't speak English. Because of prejudices against Latinos in his day he downplayed his ethnicity, or risk being blackballed from the game. As a result during his career he had to avoid many of his Mexican cousins and relatives. By the way, Reggie Jackson is part Latino too. About ten years ago Major League Baseball announced their all-time Latino team, which is an amazing collection of talent in aperiod of time. Williams was not included in this list, but Keith Hernandez was even though Williams is more Latino than Hernandez.

I knew it was you, Klydon. You broke my heart by telling me that was not real. klydon loves to go around the neighborhood and tell kids that the Tooth Fairy isn't real. (I am, however, waiting for him to tell me it's OK to put my winter coat in storage).
