Fun movie. I always thought that Perry King (one of the Lords) was the best actor of the bunch.

THe scene in which Stallone threatens the jewelry store owner was absolutely hilarious.

What I liked most, though, about the movie was that my brother's best friend played the part of Mike Mambo, the guy in the pool hall (from the Avenue J gang).

One of my favorite obscure movies is with Tony Curtis & Gilbert Roland called The Midnight Story

Don Cardi cool

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

I will check out that movie. I thought Gilbert Roland was a pretty good actor.

Check him out in a not obscure movie called "the bad and the Beautiful"

He was one of the few actors who made it from the silent movies to the sound ones.

He had an interesting speaking voice.

Ave J gang was there really an Ave J gang?

They have a park on Ave J. When I found it was a Haitian area. the Haitians would play soccer from dusk to dawn. I would play soccer with them it was fun.

They put two garbage cans 1 on each end of the field. Those were the goals you hit it you scored.

When my son was 9 I would take him there and we all would play. Could be 3 on a side or 14 on a side who ever was there. Any age 7 yr old to in my case at that time in my early 40s.

We were the only white people there. They were always very friendly to us

"You're just gonna be a memory, Chico!" smile Fine movie, but they should have used a real '50's soundtrack instead of what they did use.

Wasn't Perry King in "The Wanderers"? He was fine in that.

Seconded; I wrote about that here.

Excellent review, Mick. clap I absolutely second, third and fourth your description of Charles Durning. Saw him on Broadway a few times--wonderful.

IMO, Duvall's finest performance. Priceless scene: li Duvall shows up at fancy restaurant for lunch with his brother. Maitre d' glimpses contemptuously at him and says, "Nothing today without a reservation, I'm afraid." Duvall says, "Monsignor Spellacy's table." Maitre d' says, haughtily, "I was under the impression that Monsignor Spellacy would be lunching with Mr. Amsterdam." Duvall replies, "Well, you've made a mistake, f**khead," giving him the same, patented Robert Duvall grin that he used in GF when he heard Sonny banging the maid of honor on the other side of a door.

He wasn't in that film - maybe you're thinking of Ken Wahl?

He was in The Possession of Joel Delaney, a 1972 film (with Shirley MacLaine) that got quite a bit of publicity when it was first released, but seems to have become obscure over the years. Scary film, as I recall.

Perry King was on "The Mentalist" awhile back. He looks good, very distinguished with a full head of gray hair. He aged well.

One of my favorite books "The Last Convertible, was made into a fairly crappy miniseries, but I believe Perry King was in it.

Another underappreciated movie is "Honor thy Father," made for TV. It's based on the book of the same name by Gay Talese, covering the relationship between Joseph Bonanno and his adoring son Salvatore (Bill). The film centers on the famous "Bannana Wars" of the mid-Sixties and the struggle Bill--a college grad with limited experience in the Mob--has in trying to be Don while his father took it on the lam from the Commission. Another strength is that the script dispenses with the sentimental BS that encumbered Talese's book. Brilliant performances by Joseph Bologna as Bill; Brenda Vaccaro as his wife, Rosalie; the great Raf Vallone as Joe Bonanno, and Richard Castellano, reprising his Clemenza role as Bill's uncle and Joe's trusted aide. It's rather cheaply made, but the director, Paul Wendkos, had great experience in doing very well with limited funds. Highly recommended.

Anyone remember I the Jury? It was Armand Assante first staring movie. I think it was actually made in 1979 and was finally released in 1981.

You should see it Assante was an over the top private investigator in it. You can buy it on amazon instant video. It's not on prime.

I watched a movie called The Sentinel last month. It is an old horror film about a woman who rents an apartment that is secretly a gateway to Hell. In an infamous scene where the demons of Hell are unleashed, and come through her home, real life disformed and disfigured people were used as extras. It is creepy.

If you saw it you'd remember it for one reason. There was a vivid masturbation scene by some gal. Certainly very explicit for its time.

I don't remember much else from the movie but I do remember it was fairly good.

Talk about obscure movies. I watched part of one tonight on TCM starring Bobby Darren. It was made in 1955 and was about the NY waterfront, gangsters, and gangs of teens. It was touted as a poor imitation of On the Waterfront. Darren's performance was pretty good, but overall it was quite forgettable.

I don't know if you consider this movie obscure or not.

But it is very hard to find. It's never shown on television.

The name of it is "MississIpippi Gambler" starring Tyrone Power and a cast of great supporting character actors.

A very complicated story that takes place in New Orleans and on a river boat.

About gambling and when people solved arguments at a drop of a hat by duels with guns and swords.

As you may or may not know Power was one of the best swordsman in of any actor in Hollywoid at the time next to Basil Rathbone.

I thought the story was great. So if you can find it get it.

Looks good Footreads. Here is what one reviewer had to say:

Mississippi Gambler was Tyrone Power's first film since Darryl Zanuck loaned him to MGM for Marie Antoinette away from Twentieth Century Fox. Ty produced this one and filmed it under the banner of Universal- International. It got deserved good reviews.

No actor in the history of cinema was better suited to period pieces and costumes as Tyrone Power. If Power had been possessed of a good singing voice he'd have made the ultimate Gaylord Ravenal.

As Mark Fallon he's a gentlemen riverboat gambler who gets involved with a pair of women, the spoiled Piper Laurie from an aristocratic New Orleans family and Julie Adams, a down to earth person of few pretensions, but she comes to love Ty deeply. Who could blame her.

Ty with partner John McIntire set out to and succeed in owning a gambling palace where honest games of chance are the rule. They don't need to cheat because they're both the best at their trade.

Villain of the piece is John Baer, Laurie's weakwilled and spoiled brother. He becomes a truly hateful person in this film, the kind audiences love to hiss.

Making a film debut here is Dennis Weaver as a man who goes broke at Power's tables and then commits suicide. You could tell Weaver was going to have a big career from this brief role. You can also spot Guy Williams as one of Baer's aristocratic friends.

If Universal had used one of their contract players for Mississippi Gambler, the part would undoubtedly have been played by the fast rising Rock Hudson. But I don't think Rock could have touched what Power did in a role perfectly suited for him.

Hopefully Mississippi Gambler will come out on Video and DVD soon. Too many of Tyrone Power's performances are unseen by today's generation.

I'm not sure how obscure it is, but I just watched Crazy Joe starring Peter Boyle. It's a somewhat fictionalized version of true events. I was surprised to learn that Nicholas Gage came up witht he story and that (Exactamundo) Henry Winkler (Fonz) had a role in the movie.

Some of our older Board members may remember Paula Prentiss; she played Joe's girlfriend.

IMO, it was made to cash in on "The Godfather" fame of the early '70s. I can't watch anything with Peter Boyle in it and not expect to see him tap-dancing to "Puttin' on the Ritz". rolleyes lol
