After Michael outlines his plan to kill Sollozzo and McCluskey to Sonny, he explains that it is strictly business, and not personal.

I think the fact that he wanted to be the triggerman indicates that it was more personal than he let on.

If there was enough time to have the gun placed in the restaurant bathroom, then they could have just as easily had men planted at the restaurant to do the shooting.

Trouble with that plan is 1) Sol and McCluskey would not have been there had the meeting not taken place, and 2) if you have the meeting under those circumstances, you put Michael in direct danger, which was unacceptable.

To your underlying point, of course it was personal as well as business. If it was *strictly* business, Michael would have never offered, much less insisted, on being the triggerman, even though it was the most effective assassination plan feasible at the time.

The only way Solozzo and McCluskey would even be seen in public was at the meeting with Michael, so only he could shoot them. Of course he took what they did personally, but killing Solozzo was stricyly business because as Michael explained, the "key" for Sol was killing Vito. As you may recall Vito told Sol he could do whatever he wanted so long as he did not interfere with the Corleones. Sol decided not to take that advice.

"Io sono stanco, sono imbigliato, and I wan't everyone here to know, there ain't gonna be no trouble from me..Don Corleone..Cicc' a port!"

"I stood in the courtroom like a fool."

"I am Constanza: Lord of the idiots."

I think it was both. Mike knew that he had the best chance to kill Sol and Mac,and that it was the only way to save Vito,(and by extension, the Corleone Family).

But he also would get the chance to kill the guy who sucker punched him.

The necessity of the hit,as outlined by Mike, was strictly business.
Actually putting the bullets in their heads was personal.

I agree with Lou.
N.B.:In the novel, Michael said "the sock on the jaw had nothing to do with it." But he also said that everything the Don did was personal, like "knowing each feather that falls off of each sparrow," or something like that.

Ntra la porta tua lu sangu sparsu,
E nun me mporta si ce muoru accisu...
E s'iddu muoru e vaju mparadisu
Si nun ce truovo a ttia, mancu ce trasu.
