Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Wire are the best in no particular order.. Totally agree. I'd also like to add Boardwalk Empire, although a notch below these.

Californication is definitely a sleeper and I was a huge fan of Magic City on Starz, very well done by the creators and actors, but Starz is a complete mess financially and pulled the plug. Don't forget Entourage and Oz and last but not least, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
A few oldies:
The Mind of a Married Man Six Feet Under Deadwood Nurse Jackie
New Series Tyrant on FX is going to be a huge success, it's incredible and Ray Donovan was an instant classic, best on TV right now. Homeland is up there as well.

I saw the pilot of Ray Donovan a while ago... it has some good potential, but I'm gonna have to catch up on it before judging. I don't think it'll ever reach any level near the Sopranos or BrBa but irregardless.
As for Tyrant I had high hopes but it turned out to be disappointing for me. Typical "action" soap opera crap that won't last more than 2 seasons.
