"Rolling Stone" magazine has listed the top 500 songs of all time in their latest issue. I haven't seen it yet, but the tv news had a story on it and they had mentioned that the number one song was "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. Number two was "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones.

Hmmmm.... maybe if the song title or the artist has "Rolling Stone" in it the song placed higher

I couldn't find the complete list (or a link to it). Anyone seen it?

I have not seen it yet, but I would be interested to get it to see where The Beatles and Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man placed. That's my favorite Dylan Song.

I remember seeing that "Hey Jude" was in the top 10. I think "Imagine" was #3.

Here is Stone's Top 500 ROCK AND ROLL Songs of all time. I still can't find anything on the top 500 OF ALL TIME Yet...

Heres the top 20 with a link to the rest:

20 Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
19 Pink Floyd - Money
18 Grateful Dead - Truckin'
17 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
16 Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
15 Beatles - Yesterday
14 Cream - White Room
13 Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'N Roll
12 Who - Baba O'Riley
11 Led Zeppelin - Rock And Roll
10 John Lennon - Imagine
9 Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
8 Eagles - Hotel California
7 Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
6 Doors - Light My Fire
5 Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
4 Beatles - A Day In The Life
3 Derek And The Dominoes - Layla
2 Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
1 Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

Top 500 Rock and Roll Songs

"Hey Jude" is number 27? I don't really like Stone's list's too much because they tend to get "wishy-washy".

Wow...I totally disagree with the 3 year old list...

Where is "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison? "More Than A Feeling" by Boston? "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty? C'mon!?!?

I'll have to wait for the 500 list, but if the one DF55 posted is any inclination, it's going to be rather disappointing.

That's a nice list but that's the Top 10 songs of ALL TIME?!

I do feel they've forgot some real classics of the '40's and '50's, mostly Sinatra's works and Martin's work... But then again I"m biased because I LOVE all of their stuff...

I don't like the list either. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that out of the top 10, only Imagine belongs there. I'm a big Rolling Stones fan, but I've never liked Satisfaction. Gimme Shelter, Angie, or my favorite Stones song, Sympathy for the Devil all deserve that spot much more. I love Dylan, too, and I love Like a Rolling Stone, but my personal favorite is Knockin' on Heaven's Door. That, or practically anything off of Blood on the Tracks, too would fit the spot much better, IMO. And out of all the classics The Beatles have made, is Hey Jude really the best? Or even in the top 5, for that matter? And Stairway to Heaven, is the best song I've ever heard. That should've been there. I prefer their rock and roll list, to this one (though I've only read the thirty selections from both put together, so far).

Of that Top 10 list, only Imagine, What'd I Say, and Satifaction should even of been considered for the Top 10... I am disapointed at Rolling Stone. What are the requirments to make the list, anyhow??

The only info I could find about the voters (for the list) is that 172 artists made the picks.

Its interesting to note that 5 of the top 10 songs were recorded in a five year period in the mid '60's.

I don't like this list at all. It's got good bands, but not their best songs. I would say Gimmie Shelter for the Stones, Mr. Tambourine Man or Blowing in the Wind for Dylan, A Day in the Life or Let It Be or Across the Universe for the Beatles(So hard to choose though). And Georgia on my Mind for Charles. Come to think of it, I don't really care for their picks at all in any way, Hey Jude is good, but its not one of their best songs, and why are the Beatles so low? Imagine is good, real good, but his solo stuff would never take the cake over a post-Revolver album. Speaking of which, where the hell is "Tomorrow Never Knows"? This list makes me angry. I cancelled my subscription long ago and this makes me glad to have done so.

Doc

P.S. Remove Nirvana. That belongs in the 400's somewhere in my opinion. I know people like it, but the only good thing are is lyrics, the rest is noise.

Have you even listened to any of their softer songs?

I do feel that "What'd I Say" is Charles's best song.

Where can I find a full copy of the list?

If this list was composed by Modern Artists I don't have much hope that they'd list anyone who was before Elvis because it seems to me at this list was too... new...

I also think Woulden't It Be Nice or God Only Knows should have been the pic for the Beach Boys too. Good Vibrations is nice, but not the best. (Although I do like the new version on Brian Wilson's new cd)

Interesting SC, Thanks. So Brian Wilson was a judge. I wonder if maybe Sir Paul McCartney was, or Ringo, but I think they would have mentioned his name in that short list if he was. Oh well, 23 songs for the Beatles, not too shabby.

I don't believe smells like teen spirit deserves to on there, i mean it does have 1 of the most reconised riffs in music at the start but apart from that there is alot better songs than that
