From what I see and read on the genovese family, they DONT seem to be AS VIOLENT as as a crime family as the other 4 families. Is that really the case? Each family has had it's height of violence/murders in their history such as the bonanno's in the 70's and 80's, the Colombo's in the 60's thru the 90's, the gambino's in the 70's and 80's and the lucchese's in the 80's and 90's. Were there a violent period for the genovese's? Thanks fellas

I strongly disagree with those who claim that the Genovese Family were/are less violent than the other NY Families. Plenty of Genovese hits occured throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Two high ranking members were killed (Tommy Ryan in 1972 and Carmine Zeccardi in 1977). An attempted hit was made on Sally Palmieri (a skipper) in 1980; Carli DiPietro (another skipper) was killed in 1981. And plenty of soldiers/associates lost their lives in a violent way (Paddy Macchiarole, Lardiere, Briguglio, Pappa, George Zappola Sr, DiGiglio, Nat Maselli, John Malanga, Vincent Mistretta, Angelo Sangiullo etc, etc). Making a list of all the Genovese victims would take a lot of time and space. Gigante was known to have ordered plenty of hits.
However, the most violent Family, speaking from a historical perspective, is hands down the Colombo Family (pound for pound).

I understand what you mean hk... But I just feel like the numbers don't lie if we talking hits of each family. in the genovese, less guys got clipped in that family than the other 4 families which is actually a good thing for the genovese's. That is why the genovese family today remains on top. The bonanno's whacked skippers like it's nothing, the Gambino's historically are known to whack out their own bosses since wayyyyy back when they were the D'aquila family in the 20's. Only bosses that didn't get clipped was Carlo Gambino and john Gotti and John was either lucky or very smart to survive all the murder attempts on his life after Paul was whacked. the Colombo's are notorious for war with eachother and There were a whole lot of victims from those three wars alone and The lucchese's were pretty good, did things quiet since gagliano and lucchese ... Weren't as violent until the 70's thru the 90's. Than it got Far worse when gaspipe and vic Amuso took over. Nobody was safe from those two maniacs smh I know the genovese's are known to put in work and have clipped many guys through out their history but not as many as the other 4 families that's a fact

CORRECTION - I looked into it and it´s possible that Zappola could have been an uncle of Georgie Neck. He was only 15 apparently when Georgie Neck was born. He was indicted in 1979 on extortion charges and the newspapers said he lived in Staten Island. U can add Lawrence ricci and Ralph Coppola to that list aswel Yep! Both acting skippers.

well actually when the genovese family had its violent era during and before vito's reign on it. as genovese rose to power there were many top mob figures killed in his path. but every family has to kill to get there way.

Don't the Genovese have one or two of the more recent hits? There are a few. The list was just posted in another thread about two weeks ago called : "recent mob hits" or something.

Over the past 10-15 years, the Genovese have actually been the most violent family. Among those murdered included a captain, acting captain, soldier, as well as the attempted murder of a union official.
I know you're just talking about New York here, but if you go outside New York I would argue that Philly is the most violent in the country, in that they have had about the same number of hits as the Genovese in the past 15 years but are much smaller (like 10 times as small? something like that). So when it comes to "hits per capita" or whatever, Philly is the worst. Of course if you extend this to include Canada, Montreal is the "winner" hands down.
