I appreciate the great insights PB as always. I can only imagine how different things are now. No, you can't. Not unless you can imagine a Haitian guy running a fruit stand at the Arthur Avenue Market . Say did you hear that Gulfstream bought Calder and they are going to keep the track open and have a couple of live race days weekly. I'm guessing mainly for the gambling license since Gulfstream put Calder out of business. Sheldon Adelson put several million dollars of his own money into the push down here in Tallahassee for expanding gambling on and off the reservations, Gulfstream I'm sure is looking to expand their operations. Yeah, I saw that. But I'm not getting my hopes up for anything special. As you probably know, Gulfstream opened up for a Summer meet this year for the first time. They've always run from December to April there. It was only four days a week, but it was awful. Not only were the jockeys all shippers from South America, so were the horses. You almost couldn't read the form without an interpreter. But they should have known better anyway because summertime means Saratoga. That's where the quality trainers are, and the quality horses and jockeys follow them. And a few years back they reopened Hialeah for quarter horse racing. They claimed that it was the first step to bringing back the thoroughbreds. And we're still waiting. Hialeah used to be a VERY big deal. It was right up there with Belmont, Saratoga, Churchill Downs and Santa Anita. But they fucked that up, too. I believe they talk about Hialeah in joe dogs book. Heard jai-lai in Dania is making a killing It's an ugly crowd, but I guess they're busy enough. Jai-Alai still works to a degree in Florida because of all the South Americans there.

I don't think the ponies will ever be what they once were down here as you know there are too many gambling options and the demographics are changing down here as well. It pains me to say it. But it's a dead sport .

Binnie, here's another example: The FBI's Lame Mafia BustEarlier this month the FBI busted an alleged drug smuggling scheme between New York's Mafia and Italy's Calabrian Mafia. Of course, regular readers of Friends of Ours were not surprised to learn about the transatlantic alliance. After all, for years this blog has warned that the drug trafficking Calabrian Mafia – or ‘Ndrangheta -- was entrenched in the United States and Canada with surprisingly little push back from law enforcement. Indeed, the crime group is suspected of backing a breakaway faction from the Rizzuto family in Montreal, QB Canada for control over the drug rackets in Montreal and New York, and it necessarily would have to hook up with New York’s Mafia in order to push product in their territory. According to the FBI the Calabrian Mafia has partnered with reputed associates from the Gambino and Bonanno families that are obvious choices given their long-standing involvement in the international drug trade. The only surprise about the bust is its narrow reach into the supposed scheme concerning both smuggling logistics and involved players.
