I'm watching the new version of "Godzilla" on tv now. I had seen it a few months back on PPV and hopefully now I'll understand it a bit better. The special effects were pretty good but I objected to the whole storyline of the monster being a "good guy" now.

Of course he is. Just like they want you to root for the apes in the new "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Man---especially White Man---is bad.

Hollywood has always been overtly politically correct. But they've become outright hateful now. George Clooney, Sean Penn, et al. Great actors. But as human beings, if an asteroid hit that part of California I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep.

That's how I feel, and I stand by it. Rant over.

I wonder how Hollywood is going to take this latest backlash for not nomonating a black actor for the Oscars. Sharpton I'm sure would benefit from this.

Denzel Washington won for Training Day and I didn't even think he was that good in it.

I'm not into the overacting. I much prefer a subtle performance that draws you in and makes you believe you are watching real people. Not a cartoon.

Perhaps, Selma isn't that good. Those kind of movies swing and miss more often than they hit a home run e.g. "Bobby", "The Butler".....

That was more like a lifetime achievement Oscar. Like Pacino finally winning for "Scent of a Woman," or Scorsese for "The Departed." Not that those two hadn't been worthy of those wins, but they had both been robbed too many times prior to that.

Plus, they wanted Denzel and Halle Berry to win on the same night, which they did. Although she probably deserved her win for "Monster's Ball" anyway.

I think Washington is a great actor.

But just because Winfrey made this moving does not mean this movie is worth getting an Oscar in every category.

Sharpton should make a movie about the real story of Tawana Brawley.

American sniper or the star was not even nominated for a golden globe.

I'm a bit behind the times when it comes to movies, but I recently rented on demand "Crazy Heart". Jeff Bridges did a good job. I liked the authenticity of his singing and playing. It was not a hyped-up, corny film. Maybe a bit contrived, him playing in a bowling alley, but I don't know if that really exists in Texas.

Denzel definitely deserved his Oscar for training day imo. Crowe was kind of boring in a beautiful mind. I thought Denzel played that character great. Malcolm X so far in his career is his best performance. Pizza boy hit the nail on the head when he said he's arguably the best of his generation. I think he's one of the best of any generation honestly I've always been extremely impressed by him ever since I saw him play malcolm x. But I've seen american sniper and birdman recently. Both great movies. The way birdman was directed was amazing. It was like the whole movie was shot in one continuous shot. You have to see it to know what I'm talking about. I'm not a movie expert or anything, I just like to watch great movies with great performaces from great actors and actresses(as well as great directing) but that director deserves as much recognition as possible. I'm confident he can turn the dicaprio and Tom Hardy movie he's directing into a real gem.

I think gone girl and birdman are probably the two best movies I've seen that have come out in 2014. I think gone girl might be my number 1 by an edge but idk birdman was really good.

Saw a tv show Wednesday night on law and order. I don't watch these kind of shows normally because they have commercials.

I watched it because I saw Armand Assante had a guest roll. He played a Spanish cops father. He never sees the son, but turned up to invite the son to his wedding. He was marrying a young girl half his age. He also invited his daughter, his ex wife the Spanish cops mother.

Everything is fine until someone at the wedding started to dance with assante' young wife. Assante has this crazy look in his eyes.

Then next thing you know his young wife has a skull fracture.cops called in assante us arrested for hitting his new wife. But no one actually saw him do it.

Turns out he had a history of hitting his kids his ex wife.

No one ever presses charges against him. Not even his new wife.

Interesting for me as my Daddio was like that.

I am thinking this us the first step in assante getting a tv show of his own.

But I always say no when they ask me to do something with them so I guess I will go.

But my son asked me not to comment out loud when the movie is on.

I wonder what they think I would say?

Is anyone watching the new Fox show "Empire?" There's only been 3 episodes so far. I watched them all yesterday on "On Demand". Kind of interesting. Good cast.

My daughter and I recently watched The Budapest Hotel, a very witty comedy. I didn't realize there would be so many sexual innuendos in this movie. On a couple of occasions, my daughter left the room lol oops She hasn't watched a movie with me since.

Here's trailer.

You were spot on about the 'long take' Birdman is shot in, but whether he deserves it or not the Best Director Oscar will go to Linklater since Boyhood was a 12 year project. I personally have alot of problems with Gone Girl that would stop me from placing it in my top 10, but Birdman is no doubt top 5 for me.

I saw Foxcatcher. It was very good. Not one of the best I've ever seen good, but it was good.

I was worried at first that Channing Tatum's character was too much of a caricature but I would put the benefit of the doubt in the fact that he was playing a bipolar person.

Good performance by Carell as well. Some very cringe-inducing, memorable scenes.

You almost have to feel sorry for him in several scenes. He is just an outcast - a mentally ill man - looking for acceptance, never getting any sense of belonging and finally falling off the rails.

I figured Linklater would get it. If I were a betting man I'd put it on him. But I think the director from birdman deserves it. What problems do you have with gone girl exactly? I was riveted the whole time really. What is your #1 for the year?

I saw foxcatcher. I was honestly expecting so much more. It was easily one of my most anticipated movies but idk I felt it dragged. Still pretty good though. Carrell, Ruffalo and Tatum were all great.

First of all it's the acting outside of Afflecks Sister (forgot her name) sorry to any fans but i think Affleck is one of the worst big Hollywood actors and he was no different here. Then you have Rosamund Pike who imo doesn't deserve the praise she's getting for that completely wooden performance, i feel people are praising the character particularly the way she was written rather than Pike.

Then it's mostly a few plot points some minor, and one pretty major.

GONE GIRL SPOILERS:

The whole 24 Hour Camera thing makes Zero sense. I mean there's no explanation at all whyy, 1.the cameras picked up nothing to show that she wasn't a prisoner, but only the parts that Pike had manafactured to frame Neil Patrick Harris, even though every room in the house is being filmed 24 hours a day. for however many days she stayed there 2.If we are to believe that Pike erased all of the incriminating footage, then why is noone other than the Female detective questioning her story? I'm fine with Suspension of Disbelief but this was just avoiding an explanation so the story fit together.

Overrall i'd say it was a pretty good film, but not among Finchers best and not one of my favourites from the year. I still have a good few movies to watch before i can decide on my favourite from the year.

Those are all fair points. I personally loved Pike's performance. I just think they way she went from house wife to a cold calculating killer was just great. I love Affleck as a director. As an actor I don't think he ruins a movie but I don't think he takes it to a different stratosphere like say Dicaprio does now. But I think I've seen all of the most highly praised movies so far this outside of whiplash and inherent vice. I never thought of the 24 hour camera thing before but good catch. I'd still say either that or birdman is overall the best. Maybe it's because of the competition in the best picture category for me. I found last year's best picture category to be much stronger. If wolf of Wall Street had been released this year maybe it would've won. I also want to see that jonah hill and james Franco movie "true story". Looks good. It'll be out in May.

I also haven't seen interstellar and Selma. But I was talking about this the other day with my friend, he says that Jonah hill should've won best supporting actor last year but I said I believe that Leto, Fassbender and possibly Cooper were better(although Hill was still great imo). He also says Christoph waltz deserved his Oscar for django more than Hoffman for the master(which if I'm not mistaken you recommended to me a while ago) and even if he(Waltz) was in the lead actor category he still would've won. I personally believe that Dicaprio was better than waltz and should've been the one nomianted. But what are your thoughts?

But I think I've seen all of the most highly praised movies so far this outside of whiplash and inherent vice. I never thought of the 24 hour camera thing before but good catch. I'd still say either that or birdman is overall the best. Maybe it's because of the competition in the best picture category for me. I found last year's best picture category to be much stronger. If wolf of Wall Street had been released this year maybe it would've won. I also want to see that jonah hill and james Franco movie "true story". Looks good. It'll be out in May.

For me both of the last two years nominees have been strong. Of the nominees this year i've yet to see Selma or American Sniper. I'd honestly be fine if Whiplash, Boyhood, Bidman or The Grand Budapest Hotel won, but i can't say i enjoyed The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything too much. Still 2/3 for the Oscars is not bad, considering i usually only like 1 or 2 and think the best of the year have been ignored.

J.K Simmons in Whiplash is my favourite performance from the nominees i've seen, with Michael Keaton in Birdman a close second, and Patricia Arquette in Boyhood my favourite female performance. Looks like Julianne Moore who i love will get the Best Actress Oscar, but for this seriously? Complete Oscar-Bait performance rolleyes .

Also i'm fine with you liking Pikes performance, i'm clearly in the minority on that one but can you actually say she was ever a Housewife in the movie? There's maybe 3 short scenes in the entire movie that she could be said to be Housewife-like, and by that point she has already taking the one role she played the entire film as the "Psycho killer" as you put it. Right from the very first scene the movie makes her out to be dark and mysterious, and she never changes her demeanor at all throughout the film, even the scene where she's gutting Neil Patrick Harris like a pig she's completely wooden imo.
