I have recently been reading about some murders in LCN in which high ranking members are the ones who carry out the hits. For example, Frank Lastorino and Sonny Red Indelicato, both captains in their respective families carried out murders despite their position and value in their organization.
It makes me wonder why captains would carry out their hits when soliders and associates are the ones who supposed to being the dirty work, why would they risk life imprisonment if they could get underlings to do the hits for them? The only conclusion I can come to is that the mafia really doesn't have that much muscle and that they are short on guys who are able to commit murder, am I correct?

Thanks for the responses. Although it is quite an amateur question, I am just curious as I am surprised that families, such as the Bonnanos and Lucchese's that have over 100+ made men and 500-1000 associates, would need to rely on captains to carry out hits.
