Now Im probably the only poker addict here, so I dont know if anybody else is anticipating this show as much as I am, but is anybody else here planning on watching this? It stars Michael Madsen, and I imagine it's a lot like the movie Rounders, only drawn out through several eppisodes. If so, then I guarantee it will kick ass.

Hah, don't make that assumption. I'm a poker nut. Just got back from Vegas playing 3 straight days of Hold 'em, and I'm playing in a tourney at an Indian casino on Saturday. I'm looking forward to Tilt. Hopefully it won't be as bad as some of the poker movies I've seen.

Yeah, that's Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, 2000 World Series of Poker Champion. The reason for the nickname is obvious.

I've also met poker playing celebs like James Woods, Matthew Perry, Ben Affleck, and Tobey Maguire. It's amazing who you can meet at the first day of a World Poker Tour tournament.

OMG man!! I envy you so much right now. I cant believe you actually met those guys. Was Helmuth an ass? I bet he was. Were you at the world series or something?

Hellmuth was actually not that bad when I met him. He was actually a pretty stand-up guy at one point. I was at a WPT event in 2003 and Scotty Nguyen busted out really early, like in the first 30 minutes. Scotty was drunk already, so like any good friend would, he got up from his table and took Scotty's keys away so he would go off driving drunk. I thought it was pretty funny. Haven't had my pic taken with Hellmuth yet, though.

I'm going to another WPT event next month so hopefully I can get Barry Greenstein, Gus Hansen, and Chip Reese to autograph it. Chip doesn't play in a lot of tournaments, so it might be tough to get him. But I should definitely see the other two there.

Are all of these tournaments in Vegas? Do they ever have some in the NY casinos, or maybe Atlantic City? I see most of them on tv, and I would love to go to one.

The tournaments are held all over the world (hence the name World Poker Tour). The ones that I usually go to are the two they have in the L.A. area - The Legends of Poker (Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, CA) and the L.A. Poker Classic (Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA). You can find their schedule at http://www.worldpokertour.com. They held the Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City back in September. That would be closest to New York. You can also check out Foxwoods in Connecticut if that's not too far.

Maybe Ill have to check out the one at Foxwoods. Its much closer then AC. But then again, I probably have to be 21 to get into these places.

What does the word Tilt have to do with Poker? When I hear that word I think of pinball machines.

poker's a great game, game of strategy and cunning. you'll often hear professional players say that its more about playing the man than playing the cards. This is part of what makes poker interesting, seeing how different players react to different situations. You'd be surprised how much skill can go into a card game. Once you get to the highest levels of the game, its much more about ability than luck.

Tilt refers to when a player becomes agitated or frustrated and plays badly. When someone is constantly betting in to you, or bothering you with annoying remarks at the table, they are usually trying to get you on tilt. Someone on tilt will often make stupid and reckless moves in desperation, and will end up losing.

and one question of my own for Don Corpuzzi... ever placed highly or won a large tournament?

i'm incredibly jealous of all the poker expierience it sounds like you've had. Can't wait till i can make the trip out to Vegas and play.

I have never won or cashed in what can be called a "large" tournament. I have cashed in tournaments with buy ins for $40-50, which usually amounts in anywhere from $100-1000 in winnings. I really don't have the money to play a tournament that has a buy in for more than $100. I played in one yesterday morning that had a $25 buy in with a guaranteed prize pool of $3000, but I had a pretty cold run of cards and didn't do too well. In fact, I didn't even make it to the break.

Hopefully after I get out of business school and get a better paying job, I can afford to maybe play in one of the cheaper events at the World Series of Poker. I think the cheapest one they have is a $1,500 no limit hold 'em game. But I'm years away from being able to drop that kind of cash.

I don't play much online poker, since I get a lot of my fun at the tables meeting new people and having conversations. I also have a group of friends that play a lot of tournaments and cash games, and we try to occasionally have tournaments of our own amongst ourselves. We've all got a decent amount of tournament and live game experience, so the level of play is good. We did this last night down in San Diego and I did pretty well. We played four tournaments (for real money), and I placed first twice and second once.

One thing about Shana Hiatt - she is incredibly beautiful in person. The pictures of her you see in magazines or on TV don't do her justice. And even better, she is one of the sweetest, nicest women you'll ever meet. When I got my picture taken with her she talked to my friend and I for quite a while. Usually women that look like her don't give me the time of day.

Regarding the world series...

I have a group of friends, whom I have been playing steady cash games and small tournaments with for some time. We have something along the lines of the "Crew" which contains such players as Scott Fishman and Dutch Boyd. Anyway, we all made a pact that when we get out of college and are moderately succesful, we all have a tournament, and the winner will be entered in the World Series of Poker, courtesy of his losing friends who will also fly to Vegas to give support. We havent decided whether it would be for the main event or several of the smaller Hold'em tournaments, but either way, this gives us something to look forward to.

I can not wait to play in my first World Series. I could be the first guy out and I'd be as happy as if i won it.

For me the game of poker is all about minimizing and maximizing. The game is a lot of luck, and anybody who disputes that is wrong. But a good player knows what to do when the cards are or arent on their side. Theres nights when your gonna get shit and theres really not a whole lot you can do about that, but a good player can minimize his losses. And on nights you are gettin the cards, a good player knows how to maximize the wins. Thats why a good player always comes out on top, because in the end regardless of luck, skill always prevails.

I personally think luck is minimal factor that only comes into play once in a while in professional situations, but all the time in amateur games. I think this is clearly evident considering the fact that the same people are able to consistently win tournaments and make money.

When i said "In the end," I meant like after like several years of playing. In a single tournament or cahs game, luck can be a huge factor. Thats why you always see poker greats get knocked out early sometimes in the world series. But after a carreer of playing, a good player will always be on top even if he has had bad luck half of the time.

Heh...we also have something like that. In fact, we call ourselves "The Real Crew", since none of us are big fans of Fischman or Boyd.

I just watched this show, and I was pretty impressed.
I play poker every now and then, but I don't watch it. I wonder, those who did watch it who are poker fanatics, what did you think? Did it accuarately portray the game?

It was a bit over the top, but I guess I liked it. I will probably continue to watch it.

I watched TILT last night. It was alright, except for Michael Madsen's performance. My husband and I kept looking at each other and cringing everytime he said a line. Finally he said "You know, he isint that good of an actor is he?" and all I could say was "But he was good in Reservoir Dogs, I swear!" ha ha

Is Tilt a movie or is it a new series? It looks good......
