SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Beth Howland, the actress best known for her role as a ditzy waitress on the 1970s and '80s CBS sitcom "Alice," has died. She was 74.

Her husband, actor Charles Kimbrough, told The Associated Press that Howland died Dec. 31 of lung cancer in Santa Monica, California. He said there had been no announcement, funeral or memorial service because that's how she wanted it.

"That was her choice," he said.

Howland was born May 28, 1941, in Boston. At 16, she landed a role on Broadway alongside Dick Van Dyke in "Bye Bye Birdie." CBS later noticed Howland on stage in the 1970 production of "Company" and brought her to Hollywood for a bit part on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

It appears to be near the end, he is on life support and his family are rushing to his bed side.

The greatest of all time has passed away. He is finally at peace.

Everyone in the game had picked Ali.

He was simply the most exciting athlete I've ever seen. I remember seeing Joe Louis on television when he was already an old man and I was just a kid. My dad always remarked how old he looked because he remembered Louis as a young man. That's the same way it was with me and Ali. It was so sad to see him as an old man, ravaged by the years in the ring and his Parkinson's.

Like probably most others here on the GBB I have a few signatures of some famous people. My most-prized one is Ali's. My brother-in-law and I had gone to the last boxing match in the old Madison Square Garden (March, 1967) and after the main event's decision was announced (the crowd didn't like the call) a riot started. Bottles came raining down from the cheap seats and everyone ran out of the Garden. As my brother-in-law and I crossed 8th Avenue I saw Ali, surrounded by six of the biggest, baddest looking bodyguards you'll ever see. Still, I was able to hand my newspaper to him and he signed the back page of the New York Post. I have that proudly framed on my den wall now.

SC, that's awesome! cool

Actor Barry Pearl (my mom's distant cousin who played Doody in the film Grease; and speaking of signatures, I have a pic that both he and Rickles have signed ;)) posted this on FB: "I was walking up 8th Ave. in NYC, circa 1962, about to pass the old Madison Square Garden and I see this guy looking up at the marquee as they're putting his name up...Cassius Clay. I stop and shake his hand. Mine felt like a pea in his.

"Fade out, fade in, I'm at NBC in 1976 doing CPO SHARKEY with Don Rickles. Our studio is directly across from Carson's TONIGHT SHOW. Our shows shared the makeup area so we'd get to meet all the celebs that he'd have on as guests. This one time, Ali was a guest. Got to meet him again and tell him about meeting him in '62 on 8th Ave. in front of the old Garden at the beginning of his rise."

As for me, Ali was always an icon since childhood. It was sad to hear about the Parkinson's, and seeing him suffer for years. RIP, Champ!

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

An interesting guy saw him in front of the plaza hotel once. He had a big crowd around him.

There were some questions in some of his fights. The fight against Listen. Listen was going to kill him. Then Ali hit him with the fantham punch that knocked listen out that no one saw. Ali said he hit him with an anchor punch that no one ever saw smile

Everyone thought listen took a dive I thought that myself.

Then the biggie the fight against foreman in Africa. the ring was fixed so Ali could lean back on the ropes well over 2 feet to keep foremen from taging him when foreman had him against the ropes.that was redicules a joke. Foreman got tired and ran out of gas.

See it on YouTube.

Yeah, she was stabbed by a stalker but survived. After that she was on "The Commish" and other shows.

Yep she was stabbed and recovered. Then started some support center for victims and what they say on line is that she died today. Not stating cause of death. Wonder what killed her, only 61.....? She died in the hospital so maybe she was already in getting treatment and died...

Same thing happened to actress Rebecca Schaeffer in '89. Some nut has been stalking her for three years, and used a private investigator to find where she lived (like the guy who attacked Saldana). He shows up the first time showing her the letter and autograph that she wrote him. Shaeffer told him not to show up again, so he went to a diner for breakfast. After he was done, he showed up at Shaeffer's home again, and shot her once in the chest. Sadly, she didn't survive from the shooting. I guess Shaeffer was also preparing for an audition for the Godfather Part III at the time.

Without a doubt, one of the greats!

Madison Square Garden lost two of its big draws within a week. I went there often in the mid/late '60s to see the Rangers play and Detroit (lead by Howe) was always a fun matchup. Gordie was already considered an "older" player by then but he was always very well-respected by fans and opponents as well.

Played in the NHL at the age of 51 and still produced 41 points. Crazy.

Couple of character actresses:

Ronnie Claire Edwards, 83, who played Corabeth Godsey on "The Waltons."

Ann Morgan Guilbert, 87, who played Millie Helper on "The Dick van Dyke Show" and Grandma Yetta on "The Nanny."
