I think it's media misconception along with heavy documentaries focusing on the rehashed theme. Along with Hollywood movies creating this cliche as all mobsters are suit wearing multimillionaires and gangbangers can't figure out 2+2=4. Reality is hard to sell when you a history of stereotypes.
