El Cid with Charlton Heston, and the Lion in Winter.

IVAN THE TERRIBLE PART I

Beautifully shot. Fantastic sets, costumes, cinematography and powerful acting. Even in black and white, visually it's a stunning picture and can absolutely see Russian pride beaming throughout. 8/10

IVAN THE TERRIBLE PART II

Not as visually stunning as its predecessor, but the story is more evolved and goes into just how Ivan earned the nickname "The Terrible." Although some of the film was shot in color and the red was busting onscreen. 7/10

Originally it was planned as a trilogy but Stalin canned it after not liking Part II. I would have liked to have seen where Director Sergei Eisenstein would have taken it.

Just saw Meg.

It was really good, lots of fun.

In the previews they had shown a few Movies that really caught my attention and will be going to see.

Aquaman

Jack Blacks new flick with him as a warlock, “The house with a clock in the wall”, I think that’s what its called.

Yeah THE MEG was a fun time for sure. I've been very lazy with my reviews recently. Stay away from THE SLENDERMAN (utter garbage). MILE 22 with Mark Wahlberg was a disappointment (I was bored with the story less than halfway in. It started out well and the ending was decent, but by then it was too little, too late). BLACKKKLANSMAN was alright but didn't like all the "hit you over the head" with subliminal Trump bashing. THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME I was a little disappointed in because it looked pretty funny from the previews. This weekend I plan on seeing THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS with Melissa McCarthy (I love that woman) as well as SEARCHING.

SISTERS

Vintage De Palma with his beautifully created split screen shots. A great score by Bernard Herrmann with hints of the CAPE FEAR theme in it and a strong performance by Margot Kidder. I haven't seen much of her work outside of BLACK CHRISTMAS, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR and SUPERMAN franchise, so this was a welcome change. Unfortunately, the story was predictable but still a somewhat enjoyable ride. 6.5/10

ALEXANDER NEVSKY

Director Sergei Eisenstein and lead actor Nikolay Cherkasov create another wonder Russian masterpiece. Released at the outset of World War II, this is another nationalistic picture for Russia about a prince, who leads an army against German foreign invaders. These two collaborated on IVAN THE TERRIBLE PARTS 1 & 2 and while this was released earlier, is still in the same vein in terms of outstanding cinematography, costumes and splendor. 7.5/10

Yes, Irish "Sisters is a quiet classic & was remade recently w/ some b grade actress in the Kidder role..the classic is far superior...by the way , the girl who witnessed it (the murder)was actress Jennifer Salt who, coincidentally was around that time Al Pacino's girlfriend.

Watched a few classic horror movies lately: The Wicker Man (original from '73), Don't Look Now, Profondo Rosso and Eraserhead.

THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS

I'll just start out by saying don't waste your time. I'm a big Melissa McCarthy fan and while she's funny, her movies are hit and miss for me and this was definitely a miss. I don't mind the crudeness and it looked funny from the trailers but, like so many comedies today, the funny parts were in the previews. 5/10

BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974)

A good horror flick but not on the level of a HALLOWEEN in my opinion. I understand it has a very big following but it doesn't do it for me the way HALLOWEEN or some of the other legendary horror films do. I do, however, dig the Christmas Slasher genre and wouldn't mind seeing more of them. Great cast by the way and I'd be lying if I didn't say that having seen Margot Kidder in SISTERS recently made me want to watch this. 6.5/10

LE SAMOURAI

This film is described as the "epitome of cool" with Alain Delon staring as Jef Costello, a hitman who needs an alibi after he's seen leaving the scene of the crime after his most recent hit. Honestly, I'm not much for french films and I'd much rather take Chow Yun-Fat 22 years later in the Hong Kong adaptation of THE KILLER. 6/10

JIGOKU

A visually stunning and at times, gory and graphic Japanese horror film. The film was made in 1960 and prior to that, this type of film wasn't released as Japanese horror cinema prior to this was mostly physiological and not physical. I truly tip my hat to director Nobuo Nakagawa for having the conviction of putting this film out as it was during the period it was released. 7/10

THE MAGICIAN

What I love most about this film is it's basically a big F U to all the critics of Ingmar Bergman's work prior to this point. This is now my fifth Bergman film that I've seen recently and I think I prefer his work prior to 1960 as opposed to later than. Prior to 1960, he did a lot of period pieces while his work post 1960 was more modern. This has the usual ensemble of Bergman actors such as Max von Sydown, Ingrid Thulin, Bibi Andersson and Birgitta Pettersson. 6.5/10

Lady in White. Very unknown but underrated ghost story that takes place in 1960s. Its not a gory jump scare type film. Its more of a coming of age story that is about loss and also social issues. Also concentrates on a italian american family which i relate too

I think it's decent and not a bad movie at all. But again, I don't put it in that upper echelon of horror movie grails. Just my opinion and I know a lot of people do. It just doesn't do it for me the way some other horror movies do. Fun fact: apparently HALLOWEEN director John Carpenter talked to BLACK CHRISTMAS director Bob Clark about him (Clark) making a sequel to BLACK CHRISTMAS. It would be about an escaped mental patient who went back to the house from the original BLACK CHRISTMAS and start his killing spree all over again, with the title being HALLOWEEN. Clark passed, as he didn't want to make another horror film, but gave Carpenter his blessing to pursue his project. The rest is history!

ONIBABA

Another visually stunning film from 1960's Japan. I'm truly impressed with some of these black and white movies and how beautiful they still look so many years later and without color. The story takes place during the 1300's while a Civil War is occurring in Japan. Two women (one a mother and the other her daughter-in-law) kill soldiers and sell their armor/weapons in order to survive. When a neighbor of theirs comes back to tell the women their son/husband has died, the daughter-in-law begins a physical relationship with the neighbor. The mother, who is still grieving from her recently deceased son, tries to prevent the relationship. 7/10

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)

I've never been much for zombie movies and I haven't seen much of George Romero's work. I was more curious about this since it started the whole zombie obsession we find ourselves in today. Overall, a decently shot film with some mediocre performances. I was a little surprised by how much gore they put on screen for the time period. However, I went in to this film not caring much for zombies, and I left the film feeling the exact same way. 5.5/10

Watched Leatherface the other night. It was better than Texas Chainsaw, and pretty good as far as remakes/reboots/reimaginings go. They probably went a little far with some of the racier scenes, which is not something I'd usually complain about - less is more in this case. And I think the guy who they cast as Leatherface wasn't really a good physical match for him - they probably would've been better off going with another cast member. And I'm not sure his transition into Leatherface was very believable. But, still a respectable showing.

Moe, are you talking about the 2017 version LEATHERFACE? If so, I wasn't such a huge fan of it. It looked alright from the previews but it just didn't deliver for me.

Yeah. 2017 Leatherface.

I'm also going through the Nightmare on Elm Street series. I've started with Wes Craven's New Nightmare and then chronologically. I've watched up to and including Dream Master. So far they're all pretty good except the second one, with its homoerotic overtones.

Where do you rank them, Irish?

Honestly, I was never much of a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET fan. I always preferred FRIDAY THE 13TH. However, to answer your question, my top 3 NIGHTMARE movies, in order, would be:

1) A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)
2) FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE
3) WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE

Leatherface was not that good.

On a Nightmare On Elm Street
1. 1984. The First ones are mostly the best
2. The Dream Warriors.
3. 2010. Perhaps the best reboot in a franchise.

Yesterday I watched SHAFT, DOLEMITE and SUPER FLY. These were all part of a Blaxploitation collection via Filmstruck. They'll be removed from the service Thursday so I needed to watch them before they did. I had only seen SHAFT before and while the theme is legendary, I wasn't a fan of the movie. The same could be said for SUPER FLY (I actually saw the remake before this and prefer it to the original). DOLEMITE was a nice surprise that was cheesy bad but in a good, 70's kind of way.

Next up will be my first viewings of CLEOPATRA JONES and SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG to finish out the collection.

Actually, CLEOPATRA JONES wasn't very good at all (bad karate scenes all around) and SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG was very boring. Mostly a movie about a guy on the run with an score on it. Very little dialogue, just very disappointing and this was the film that supposedly kicked off the Blaxploitation genre.

I've seen COFFY and FOXY BROWN but not SHEBA BABY. I liked COFFY more than FOXY BROWN but both are enjoyable. And yes, Pam Grier rocks!

I've seen COFFY and FOXY BROWN but not SHEBA BABY. I liked COFFY more than FOXY BROWN but both are enjoyable. And yes, Pam Grier rocks!

She still was hot as she got older..( Jackie Brown )

I didn't want to leave blood on your carpet...

THE PREDATOR

While I wasn't wild about seeing this, I actually had a fun time with it. Shane Black does a great job at making this an homage to the original, while at the same time, allowing this film to stand on its own. The original score is used, it's funny, and references the first 2 films of the franchise. While I wasn't a huge fan of the predator dogs (yes, you read that right), I did understand their purpose. The team of characters seem to work well together, each offering and bringing something to the group. 5.5/10
