People say there hasn't been a boss murder since '85 but that Bonanno acting head Montagna was clipped in canada, no?

In the mob, you're either at the dinner table, or on the menu.

Part of being a boss of an organized crime group or any large organization is possessing elite street smarts and an ability to read people. Any mob boss worth a crap knows any guy can lose his shit over a woman, which is exactly why they don't get involved with affairs of the heart.
I understand what you mean, but I am sure he thought if he told the kid to go away that would be the end of it. Cali must have been accustomed to being treated like a king by the local people over there on Staten Island. Most people there would not say something disrespectful to a mob guy, much less take one on in a physical confrontation, even if armed. And Comello came to Cali's house. What was Cali going to do? Cower inside while he called Paulie Walnuts or someone to handle it? That would look weak. No, he was going to handle it.

What was Cali going to do? Cower inside while he called Paulie Walnuts or someone to handle it? . Yes. Precisely. No, he was going to handle it. So he thought.
"...the successful annihilation of organized crime's subculture in America would rock the 'legitimate' world's foundation, which would ultimately force fundamental social changes and redistributions of wealth and power in this country. Meyer Lansky's dream was to bond the two worlds together so that one could not survive without the other." - Dan E. Moldea
