JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM
Another no nonsense chapter in the John Wick trilogy. Picking up right where Chapter 2 left off and never letting it's foot off the gas. I was never a huge Keanu Reeves fan before this trilogy but this has definitely made me appreciate him more. Overall, a very solid action film, even if I did feel a little fatigue by the end of it from all of the action. I would definitely be down for another chapter if Lionsgate, Keanu and director Chad Stahelski were down. 7/10 They are already working on a 4th movie, and a TV show called The Continental. The movies have done so well, that John Wick 3 has nearly broke even already from this passed weekend. Its budget was 55 million, and you always double that for advertising and what not, so 110 million. It currently has a total of 92 million in revenue, in this past weekend alone, so it should break even with an extra 20 million by the end of next weekend or better.

About a fourth film, I haven't heard any confirmations yet. Just that Keanu and Stahelski would both be down if the audience and Lionsgate both wanted it to happen (which, judging by the numbers over the weekend, I'd say they do).

BRIGHTBURN
The evil Superman. I really enjoyed this opposite end of the spectrum take on the tale of Superman. Crashing in Kansas from another world, Brandon Breyer, uses his powers not for good, but rather for bad intentions, once he realizes his potential and gets his first taste of killing. I typically don't like child/teenage actors as I find them annoying more often than not. However, Jackson A. Dunn who stars as Brandon, does a tremendous job with his characters arc from start to finish. This probably won't make much noise at the box office, but if you're in to horror or superhero films, I recommend this! 7.5/10
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS
I wasn't a huge fan of 2014's GODZILLA, but the trailer and special effects for the sequel had my interest. Overall, I felt about the sequel much the same I felt about the first one: the storyline was meh but the effects were good. So depending on how you enjoyed the 2014 installment, will determine how you enjoy this year's release. 6/10

The life of Elton John, told through an unflinching R-rated (thank you!) film and at times, musical. Taron Egerton did a wonderful job as Elton and while overall the film was enjoyable and wasn't too much of a musical (except towards the end). The last 30-45 minutes they seem to cram more musical numbers in which felt forced and rushed and took away from the final product. Not a bad movie at all, but definitely not on the BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY level. 6.5/10 We have this on the list, thanks for the review. Hope to see it sooner than later.

Octavia Spencer gives a creepy and enjoyable performance but other than her, this movie is very bland. Storyline is pretty weak and I kept waiting for something to happen and it doesn't really until the last 15 minutes or so of the film. More of a suspense than horror film. 5.5/10
X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX
A mulligan from the 2006 version and while this was better, overall, it beats out APOCALYPSE but not FIRST CLASS or DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The X-Men franchise started out well with the 2000 version and X2: X-MEN UNITED, and with the exception of the reboot FIRST CLASS, the franchise (outside of DEADPOOL and LOGAN) has not put out a quality product. I will miss some of the cast as I've always loved Michael Fassbender as Magneto and James McAvoy as Professor X, but I am glad to see Marvel finally with their property back and hope they wait a couple of years before rolling out their version, which I'm sure is the best we'll get and what fans have been waiting years to see! 6/10

"15:17 to Paris": This movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, is about the three US servicemen, friends since childhood, who in 2015 bravely thwarted an armed terrorist intent on staging a massacre on a French train. It stars the three actual servicemen. It's a good story, but since the action and aftermath are brief, it has to flit back and forth, annoyingly, between their rather maladjusted childhood and the actual event. The movie doesn't bend over backwards to portray them as heroes, just as guys who reacted bravely and effectively. Francois Hollande, then President of France, spoke very eloquently in a ceremony honoring them. Not a bad movie if you can get through the early scenes, which take up most of the film.

CHILD'S PLAY
A terrible remake. After it was over I asked myself, "what did I just watch?" I was never huge into the franchise and I understand how the story shows our growing over reliance on technology. Even though I'm typically not a fan of child actors, Gabriel Bateman really was the only person to do a decent job. Aubrey Plaza was her usual airhead self, with very little to contribute to the film. Mark Hamill even seemed to phone it in as the voice of Chucky. His performance felt like it was done in 1 afternoon session. And the mechanical doll itself (not the CGI) was awful and the look was just off. 4/10 Yeah. I'll be giving this one a miss. Doll looks awful.
I invoke my right under the 5th amendment of the United States constitution and decline to answer the question.

ANNABELLE COMES HOME
Probably the best of the trilogy but that's not saying much. A few misdirection's to keep the audience guessing on the jump scares. Like any movie within this series there is a few but felt the pace was slower than it maybe should have been. It's always great to see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga sink back into their roles as the Warrens. Even young Mckenna Grace as their daughter Judy Warren showed some range for such a young actress. Other than that, just as with every spin-off within the Conjuring Universe, it didn't do it for me. 5.5/10 Thanks i12,,,,, wife will have me searching for this on the streaming device once its uploaded.

That'll be your best bet. I wouldn't waste my time or money on it at the theaters personally. YESTERDAY A touching tribute from director Danny Boyle to the Fab Four (plus an interesting premise). A world where no one had ever heard of The Beatles, except for Jack Malik (played by Himesh Patel), after being involved in an accident, wakes up to just such a world. Struggling with his own music career, he plagiarizes The Beatles songs to finally make a name for himself. However, over the course of the film, he must choose between the feelings his has for his long time friend and former manager Ellie (played by Lily James) and his successful music career. A very touching moment towards the end of the film that I won't spoil. 6/10

US
Expectations were high going in to this after Jordan Peele knocked his debut out of the park with GET OUT. And while the latter story has an element of suspension of disbelief to it in order for it to work, the same is true for US. However, this is one I could not buy in to. In GET OUT the element of the story that required buying in too was rather small and almost insignificant in the grander scheme of the film. With US, so much of the story was built upon this suspension that if you didn't buy in to it, you're going to have a bad time. I applaud Peele for his originality and I'm glad to see him devoting so much time to the horror genre and his attempts to bring fresh material to the table. I just hope he isn't a victim of his own success and he can develop a film more in tune with his first outing, as this was not a worthy successor in my opinion. 5.5/10 Saw this last night.... your 5.5 was very generous. Wife enjoyed it but seamed slow and confusing to me.

MAFIOSO (1962)
Nino Badalamenti (Alberto Sordi) left his small hometown in Sicily for a job at the Fiat plant in Milan. Now he's a successful manager, with a blond Northern wife Marta and two blond little girls. He returns to Sicily after eight years to introduce them to his family. Director Alberto Lattuada brilliantly shows the cultural clashes between Marta and her Sicilian in-laws, in many howlingly funny scenes. Nino, carefree and happily reveling in his native habitat, gets a rude awakening when Don Vincenzo Ugo Attanasio), the local Mafia gabboletto to whom Nino is beholden, asks for a deadly favor in return. "Mafioso" is in the great tradition of postwar Italian cinema, mixing comedy and brutality while never losing humanity. Sordi, often called the Italian Peter Sellers, is never less than perfect. So is Attanasio and everyone else. Outstanding!
