An interesting point from this article is that maybe if the government (Italian or American) did what it's supposed to do, maybe these businesses wouldn't have to seek loans elsewhere. However, if this is the case, it seems that "the mafia" may be the very ones keeping the economy going....at least in the small business sector. ----We only have to look back to 2008 to get an idea of how the mafia is going to react to this crisis. Back then they showed their significant power and influence by using their huge stockpiles of capital to buy out or “rescue†companies that were going bust. After the pandemic is over, the same is expected to happen in Italy, and for that matter, anywhere in the world organized crime is active. “The mafia is sure to offer credit and capital to entrepreneurs struggling with the pandemic. It happened back in 2008 with the financial crisis. Italy will have to deal with criminal organizations and as a government, we will have to do everything we can to fight it,†says Nicola Morra, a senator and the chairman of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission.-------

Great point!!
I think of the scene in Sopranos when Tony ask Sylvio about the two businesses that are traditionally recession proof.

The boss woman does not have authority over her children. The head of Porta Nuova family, Teresa Marino, after obtaining house arrest had asked for the restitution of the possibility of administering the life of the minor children.
The Court of Appeal of Palermo has denied it to her and in the 1,829 pages of which the Panta Rei sentence is composed, he dedicates a large chapter to the wife of the boss Tommaso Lo Presti, known as Il Pacchione (the fat). Teresa Marino fully replaced her husband and for this she raised her children in a mafia context. This is the reason why she does not deserve to exercise parental responsibility, for the entire period of expiation of the sentence, 10 years and 8 months.
The Panta Rei trial is against the Porta Nuova and Bagheria mafia : the fourth section of the Court pronounced the sentence on September 20 and in these days has filed the reasons, in which it is very severe with the woman, wife but also alter ego of the husband in the period of his detention; therefore equipped with authority to manage Cosa Nostra affairs, from the lace to the keeping of the cashier and financial support funds for prisoners. Activities also carried out in the presence of children, who, the judges observe, attended mafia meetings held in their home. Hence the consideration that mafia bosses do not deserve power over minor children.

Unjust detention, compensation of 667 thousand euros for Bruno Contrada Bruno Contrada must be compensated for unjust detention. The Court of Appeal of Palermo accepted the request for compensation presented by the former number two of the Sisde, sentenced to 10 years for external competition in mafia association. In Contrada, defended by the lawyer Stefano Giordano, 667 thousand euros were paid. The conviction of the former policeman was found illegitimate by the European Court of Human Rights and by the Cassation. https://gds.it/articoli/cronaca/202...da-a259fc0e-fb1a-465a-a7f4-2075fb55388b/

The famous repentant Francesco Di Carlo, from Altofonte died at the age of 79, killed by the coronavirus in a hospital in the Ile de France region of Paris, where he had moved a few years ago with his partner. Di Carlo had felt bad in the past few days and he had a respiratory crisis from which he never recovered.
From Altofonte "Franco" Di Carlo had left very early, to move to Milan and then to England, on the tracks of international drug traffic. In the spring of 1982 he had been arrested and since then he was no longer released from prison, until 1996, when - at the end of his sentence - before being extradited to Italy, he decided to speak with prosecutors about the trial of life senator Giulio Andreotti. As a collaborator of justice, Di Carlo told between other their excellent relationships and a meeting in Milan in 1975, where, together with the boss Stefano Bontade, he held a meeting with Silvio Berlusconi and Marcello Dell'Utri, to decide the "protection" to the current Forza Italia leader, who would have feared kidnappings. Thus the groom Vittorio Mangano went to Arcore, in the residence of the Milanese entrepreneur. Di Carlo was involved in one of the never resolved international thrillers, the murder of the banker Roberto Calvi, which occurred in London in 1982 and disguised as a suicide by hanging under the bridge of the Black Friars. From that accusation the repentant had been acquitted.

Francesco Bonura, 78 years old, considered one of the most influential bosses, and Vincenzino Iannazzo, 65 years old, considered exponent of the 'Ndrangheta, have been released from prison in consideration of their state of health. Bonura, definitively sentenced for mafia association to 23 years, was at 41bis. Some of Italy's most notorious mafia bosses like Santapaola and Bagarella could return home, due to the Covid19 crisis in prisons.

I can only imagine how close LE would be watching guys at that level. Them becoming fugitives, unlikely because of age. However, contributing to OC operations, seems plausible.

The list of those who could soon benefit is impressive: Leoluca Bagarella, the Belloccos, Pippo Calò, Pasquale Condello, Raffaele Cutolo, Teresa Gallico, Tommaso Inzerillo, Salvatore Lo Piccolo, Piddu Madonia, Giuseppe Piromalli, Benedetto Santapaola, just to name a few of the over seventy who may now have the requisites for returning home.

Imagine the meeting of minds between new and old within the OC in Southern Italy lol, the silver lining for CN, Ndragheta, Camorra, if they can put something together, either in the flesh or via pizzini.
Just to have those guys out of prison, think of the potential sign to the rest of the world. You wonder if the Mafiosi see an opportunity to doing this, based on the world climate/ market?

The fourth section of the Palermo Court of Appeal increased the sentence to Giuseppe Greco , accused of four extortions and now found guilty of all, while at first instance in two cases he had been acquitted. The sentence carries the sentence from 9 years and 6 months to 14 years and 8 months.
The trial was celebrated with the ordinary rite, while the other defendants chose the abbreviated. Greco is brother of Carlo, sentenced to life imprisonment for the massacres and for some murders of the 80s (Tempesta trial). The trial in which he was found guilty is a rib of the Brasca and Quattro.zero operations and took place despite the suspension of the judicial activity, linked to the Coronavirus danger, for the imminent expiry of the terms of pre-trial detention, which would have resulted the release of the accused.

This week, the Palermo prosecutor asked 20 years for Carmelo Bartolone, considered head of Bagheria clan, 12 for Pietro Flamia, 7 for Luigi Di Salvo and Rosario La Mantia, 6 for Alessandro Vega and 2 for Antonio Lepre. The charges against them, for various reasons, are those of the Mafia association and extortion. For a seventh defendant, Gioacchino Di Bella, the absolution was instead requested.
The operation carried out by the carabinieri, followed a strong reaction from the part of the traders. Over thirty of them, decided to collaborate in order to free themselves from the mafia yoke and from the fear that caused them to oppose the lace, an illicit tax capable of gripping the whole local economic fabric.
The collaboration of some repentants like Sergio Flamia, Stefano Lo Verso and Antonino Zarcone, was fundamental during the investigations. Their contributions were used to frame the many pieces of the puzzle reconstructed by the DDA and the military.

Italy’s Mafia prisoner releases spark political fight Center-right opposition parties, smelling blood, are calling for a vote of no-confidence in justice minister. By HANNAH ROBERTS 5/7/20, 8:44 PM CET Updated 5/8/20, 1:09 PM CET ROME — Until last month, 85-year-old Franco Cataldo was serving a life sentence for his role in one of Italy’s most infamous and traumatic murders: In 1993, Giuseppe Di Matteo, a 12-year-old whose Mafia father had turned state's witness, was kidnapped, held hostage for two years, strangled and dissolved in acid. Now, because of the coronavirus crisis, Cataldo is among several hundred mafiosi and drug traffickers who have been freed or put under house arrest to lower to risk of mass infection in Italy's overcrowded prisons. https://www.politico.eu/article/italys-mafia-prisoner-releases-spark-political-fight/

Mafia, maxi raid between Palermo and Milan with 91 arrests: business in the North for the Acquasanta and Arenella clans
Maxi operation tonight against the mafia. A blitz between Palermo and Milan led to 91 orders of pre-trial detention in prison, a blow to the Acquasanta and Arenella clans who did business with extortion, with races in racecourses, with drugs, with luxury watches and also with the marketing of coffee pods and capsules. The bosses had also infiltrated a cooperative that works at the Palermo shipyards.
In the sights of the finance guard there are 91 bosses, wingmen, extortors and figureheads of two historic Palermo clans. The maxiblitz was coordinated by the DDA of Palermo led by Francesco Lo Voi.
Exponents of historic Palermo mafia families such as the Fontana and Ferrante families ended up in handcuffs. The disputed charges are in various capacities of mafia association, extortion, fictitious registration of assets, receiving stolen goods, money laundering, drug trafficking, sports fraud and scam.

Mafia bosses netted in big sweep 91 arrests, clans allegedly poised to exploit virus emergency
(ANSA) - Rome, May 12 - Italian police on Tuesday arrested 91 Mafia bosses, underlings, loan sharks and front men belonging to two 'historic' Palermo clans operating in Milan in a probe into the Mob's efforts to take advantage of the coronavirus to infiltrate the Italian economy. Other clans including the Acquasantas and the Arenellas were also hit. The two historic Palermo clans, the Ferrantes and the Fontanas, allegedly coordinated criminal activities from Milan, police said. Charges range from mafia association to extortion, fraudulent assets possession, receiving stolen goods, money laundering, drug trafficking, sporting fraud and fraud, police said. Police said Cosa Nostra was set to spring into action and gobble up crisis-hit firms and other activities that shut down during the virus lockdown. They said the economic crisis was a "very favourable context for boosting the clans' criminal plans".
