Italian police nab 91 mafia suspects in 'mega-raid' Dozens of alleged members of the Sicilian mafia were arrested across the entire country. Authorities are concerned organized crime may be using the pandemic to increase its power even as violent crime drops. Palermo (DW/D. Dedovic) Italian media reported on Tuesday that 91 bosses, deputies, extortionists and figureheads of several Sicilian mafia clans had been detained in a "mega-raid". The Guardia di Finanza, which is in charge of financial crimes and regularly tasked with bringing down organized crime figures, made the arrests in what is known in a series of simultaneous raids across nine different regions of the country from the very north to the far south. Amongst those arrested were members of the Acquasanta, Arenella, Ferrante, and Fontana families, which have historically exercised control over parts of the Sicilian capital Palermo. They are being charged with a range of crimes including money laundering, drug trafficking, sports fraud, receiving stolen goods, extortion, and of course belonging to a mafia organization. Some of the suspects are believed to have been involved in corrupt work contracts for projects at the Palermo shipyard, as well as running illegal slot machines and online gambling. Charges also relate to corruption in the Palermo fruit and vegetable market. Assets amounting to €15 million ($16.2 million) were also seized. One of the men arrested was Daniele Santoianni, a former contestant on the Italian iteration of the popular reality show Big Brother. He had been appointed the legal spokesman for a company called Mok Caffe, which claimed to be a coffee importer but is believed to be a front for organized crime. Lockdown loan-sharking Although violent crimes have dropped significantly in Italy during its coronavirus lockdown, authorities are worried that the Sicilian mafia, also called Cosa Nostra, as well as the ‘Ndrangheta and Camorra syndicates in Calabria, are taking advantage of the situation for purposes of extortion and loan-sharking. With unemployment climbing, people in Sicily have reported receiving much needed funds, essential supplies, and groceries from local mafia members. The practice of appearing to step in with help where state institutions are lacking has long been a tactic of maintaining control and gathering tacit public approval throughout the Cosa Nostra's centuries-long history. https://www.dw.com/en/italian-police-nab-91-mafia-suspects-in-mega-raid/a-53414320

Mafia in Palermo, asked for 261 years in prison for the bosses of Porta Nuova Among the defendants there is also Francesco Arcuri, for whom the request is 14 years, 2 months and 20 days . This is the alleged instigator of the 2010 murder of the lawyer Enzo Fragalà , already sentenced for this reason, on March 23, to 24 years in prison.
According to the reconstruction of the accusation, the gang, very active, would have invested and would have been the de facto owner of Pronto Bus Sicilia, one of the companies that transport tourists on board buses discovered in the historic center of Palermo, but also of clubs, pubs and taverns.
In addition to Arcuri, considered the head of the Borgo Vecchio family, the bosses of the Porta Nuova district, Tommaso Di Giovanni (16-year request) and his brother Gregorio, called Sorriso, are also charged of fraudulent transfer of values (and for this reason the request is for two years).
The highest sentence, 18 years, is proposed for Francesco Pitarresi. Salvatore Dario Arcuri, Francesco's brother, came out of the trial and negotiated a two-year sentence. The position of the boss Cosimo Vernengo is omitted.

Maxi confiscates 150 million euros from a Cinisi entrepreneur. This is the 72 year old Andrea Impastato , son of Giacomo called "u sinnacheddu", a prominent mafia member of the Cinisi family, in constant relationship with the Badalamenti, and brother of Luigi, killed in Palermo during a mafia ambush on September 22, 1981.
On October 2, 2002 Impastato was arrested for mafia-style criminal association after a long and complex anti-mafia investigation by the Palermo mobile team against a criminal group committed to managing and managing the Corleone heritage.
The investigations, which led to the arrest of Impastato originated from an activity against Giuseppe Lipari , arrested on 24 January 2002, definitively sentenced for mafia association precisely for his proximity to Bernardo Provenzano. Lipari was the main point of reference for the economic interests of the then superlatitant on whose behalf he had managed his huge patrimony.
Analyzing the material seized in Lipari's house, it emerged that Impastato had been indicated by Provenzano as one of the main contacts through which Lipari himself could have obtained support in the administration and management of the assets. The massive investigation carried out by the Palermo mobile team in the anti-mafia operations that culminated in the arrest of hundreds of suspected mobsters and numerous fugitives has revealed a series of contacts by Impastato with numerous prominent personalities of the Cosa Nostra, such as Bernardo Provenzano and Salvatore Lo Piccolo .

27 years on the run.
Matteo Messina Denaro / Boss in the shadows since 1993: fugitive and theories (Nostre) Publication: 01.06.2020- Emanuela Longo Matteo Messina Denaro, the story of the number one boss of Cosa Nostra and fugitive since 1993 at the center of the episode of Cose Nostre
The transmission "Cose Nostre" returns from today 1 June on Rai1, in the late evening, to retrace the stories of the mafia and the secret affairs of the most famous bosses. It was therefore impossible not to leave with the "Chief of the Chiefs" Matteo Messina Denaro , the so-called "boss in the shadows" considered the number one of Cosa Nostra and a fugitive for 27 years now. Messina Denaro is considered the head of the Castelvetrano district, the last of the "Corleonesi", fugitive since 1993 and the undisputed representative of the mafia in the province of Trapani. However, his great power exercised him far beyond the borders of his province. Since 1993 they have looked for him far and wide with various blitzes made also in light of numerous testimonies, such as that of a repentant according to whom he is in Veneto. Numerous the names used in the pizzini in which he signed himself, found by investigators in the hideout of Binnu Provenzano, in Montagna dei Cavalli. His life runs parallel to the history of the post-war mafia. However, everything seems to explode between 1992 and 1993 when Cosa Nostra declared war on Italy with sensational attacks in which the judges symbol of the fight against the mafia died - from Falcone to Borsellino - and bombs exploded in the main cities of Italy. The reaction of the state is not long in coming and while prominent names of Cosa Nostra end up in prison, like Totò Riina, only one man manages to escape capture: it is Matteo Messina Denaro.
MATTEO MESSINA DENARO, BOSS LATITANT FROM 1993 The wanted number one par excellence, Matteo Messina Denaro has the "merit" of having brought Cosa Nostrato a new level. Traces of him have been lost in the wheat fields of the Trapani countryside, the same ones in which father Ciccio, the mafia patriarch, had initiated him to the values of the old rural mafia. From him he also learned the secrets of hiding, since the man was found lifeless, in 1998, died of a heart attack. From that moment the command passed to his son Matteo. The fugitive boss is considered responsible for an unknown number of executions as well as among the organizers of the kidnapping of the little Giuseppe Di Matteo, strangled and dissolved in acid after 779 days of captivity. Around the figure of Matteo Messina Denaro a real myth has been created. His hiding began in the summer of 1993, when he was last seen on vacation in Forte dei Marmi with his brothersFilippo and Giuseppe Graviano . Since that time, an arrest warrant was issued for mafia association, murder, massacre, devastation, detention and port of explosive material, theft and other minor crimes. But Messina Denaro not even the shadow. There are many theories about it: there are those who claim that it can still be in Sicily and those who talk about face and fingertip surgery with a view to a drastic change of identity. Among other theories also those who argue that it can be protected by the 'ndrangheta. Certainly, it still enjoys a dense protection network between Sicily and Northern Italy which has so far made it possible to avoid capture.
During the transmission of Rai1 which starts right from its history we will see the testimonies of those who have dealt with all these years of his hunt, by Nino Di Matteo , Andrea Tarondo and Teresa Principato , passing through members of the police such as Giuseppe Linares , Renato Cortese , Saverio Montalbano and Rino Germanà as well as journalists and collaborators.

Mafia, blitz with 11 arrests in Palermo: roles, tasks and the new godfather of Noce's mandamento revealed
Salvatore Alfano had become the new godfather, a role ratified by the older boss, Settimo Mineo, who had presided over the first summit of the new cupola after Riina's death. A kiss on the mouth in the main square of the neighborhood had in fact sanctioned the investiture by the Mafia boss.
Wiretaps that helped shed light on the dynamics within families, leading to the police's anti-mafia operation this morning. Eleven arrests: nine people ended up in prison and two ended up under house arrest.
Among the 11 arrested there is the same Alfano, 64 years old, believed to be the new boss of Noce. Settimo Mineo - the boss who had tried to rebuild the new Cupola after Totò Riina's death often visited him in the family dealership, in Piazza Principe di Camporeale. A clear sign of respect.
The investigation of the mobile team shows that the mandate of Noce aimed at a strict control of the territory, with extortion on the ground and even with the management of the rides; in recent times the bosses had also launched into the real estate brokerage sector.

Anti-mafia blitz in Palermo, the Guardia di Finanza arrested 10 between Cosa Nostra members (Porta Nuova and Pagliarelli 'mandamenti') and frontmen involved in the business of legal bets in Sicily and other regions on charges of mafia-type association, external mafia association, money laundering and fraudulent transfer of values aggravated by mafia aiding. Companies worth 40 millions euros have been seized. The expansion of the network of betting agencies and corners managed by the seized companies was guaranteed by the protectionist umbrella of the mafia families with whom the suspects they have constantly interacted.
The clans of Porta Nuova and Pagliarelli would have allowed the expansion of the network of betting agencies and corners managed by the companies close to the Mafia. The latter would have guaranteed the opening of centers controlled by the mafioso Salvatore Sorrentino. Behind the operation there was also the gang of Porta Nuova that re-used the money earned from investments in the agencies to keep the mafia affiliates detained and to have a "life annuity" for the family members of Nicolò Ingarao, the boss murdered few years ago.
Also involved in the deal are the "mandamenti" of Noce, Brancaccio, Santa Maria di Gesù and Belmonte Mezzagno and San Lorenzo, which would have given the go-ahead for the opening of betting centers in their territories. The economic operations would have been planned during the summit which would also have been attended by the top leaders of Pagliarelli's mandate: Settimo Mineo and Salvatore Sorrentino, arrested in recent months.

Eight years to Antonino Graviano, son of a cousin of the brutal bosses of Brancaccio, of attempted extortion and possession of an illegal weapon. Graviano had been arrested in the last few days of May, after showing up at a construction site to ask for lace, making use of his surname. After the arrest, a search was carried out and a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum pistol with an abraded serial number was found and seized at the house of the mafia cousin. Graviano has a history of receiving stolen goods, robbery and theft: his father Francesco is the son of a brother of Michele Graviano, killed in 1982, father of Giuseppe and Filippo, sentenced to life imprisonment for the massacres of '92 -'93 and for the murder of Don Pino Puglisi, as well as Benedetto and Nunzia Graviano, both convicted of mafia. The extortor would immediately claim his "belonging" to the territory, saying to the targeted businessman: "I am from Brancaccio and those inside are also to eat."

Mafia, prosecutor Paci: "Messina Denaro for Riina was like a son" June 12 2020 mafia, Matteo Messina Money, Sicily, Chronicle
" Matteo Messina Denaro is one who burns the stages because during the 80s he proves to be a purebred horse. He commits dozens of murders, even excellent ones. Let's say that in terms of ability there is hardly any discussion. A faithful of Totò Riina since the 80s ". The prosecutor Gabriele Paci said it during the indictment for the trial of Matteo Messina Denaro, accused of being one of the instigators of the attacks by Capaci and Via D'Amelio, which is celebrated before the Assize Court of Caltanissetta.
"Of the proximity of Matteo Messina Denaro to Riina - added the prosecutor - not only did the collaborators of justice talk about it but Riina himself talks about it in prison as one who was the light of his eyes. The father had put it in his hands "And I made him good," he said, remembering this mobster who had grown up on his knees. He speaks of him as an affectionate father, but suddenly anger explodes because this young man that he had raised had betrayed his teachings and so instead of putting bombs, he started doing business. "
"Around the fugitive of the accused Messina Denaro, the figure of a mafioso who does business, who dresses Armani, who makes light poles as Totò Riina says in the Opera prison in Milan, one of that mafia who chose the strategy submergence ", continued Paci during the indictment.
"The trial instead gives us a different figure of the accused: of a bloodthirsty executioner who killed innocent people and children, a massacre. They are two parts of the same figure - he continued - in '92 he was just thirty years old when Cosa nostra launched his deadly attack on the state, in response to the sentences of the Maxiprocesso ".
"If Messina Denaro had not endorsed Riina's massacre strategy, deciding not to go against the state, what would Riina have done," added Paci.
"In the meantime - he continued - he could not have counted on the people of Trapani and could not have spent part of the hiding in Mazara del Vallo and Castelvetrano. So the speech of the consensus of the people of Trapani, in the person of Matteo Messina Denaro, is a fundamental consensus. Riina would not have he could never have ordered what he did without them. If everyone hadn't gone after him, he wouldn't have been able to wage war on the state, and what his diabolical mind had already worked out. "

They are rebuilding the contributions of Trapani to the rise of Totò Riina within the Cosa Nostra.
In the indictment, the assistant prosecutor also reconstructed the balance within the Trapani mafia and its importance in Cosa Nostra. " The province of Trapani is fundamental for history and for the present of Cosa Nostra, also for the connections with the American mafia: after Corleone, it was Riina's house "."In the southern area both Riina and Provenzano had purchased a lot of land and this was historically their area of reference, so much so that from Trapani in the seventies the assault on the old families of the eighties started, to result in the murder of Stefano Bontade in 1981. In those years, in Trapani - he added - the Rimi in Alcamo, the Minore in Trapani and the Buccellato in Castellammare del Golfo, all connected with Gaetano Badalamenti of Cinisi, all swept away by Riina who - having won the war - led the 'traitors'. "In court the prosecution brought then those who were different rotations at the top of the Trapani family, highlighting the discrepancy between the actual role of Mariano Agate and one described by some collaborators of justice, as Vincenzo Calcara ." To make honor - he said - the mandate of Marsala was dissolved, giving life to that of Mazara del Vallo, headed by Agate, who however was not the leader of the Trapani mafia ". Role that for long decades was covered by Don Ciccio Messina Denaro , father of the current fugitive. " The passing of the baton between the 'zu Ciccio and his son is one of the topics of this trial", added Paci, citing the last murder in which father and son would have participated, dating back to 1989." 'Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo were like San Giuseppe Jato and Corleone' ", said Giovanni Brusca in the courtroom when he was heard on 12 December 2017. " Trapani - explained Paci - at that moment is a land of fugitives; many of these are from Palermo, such as the Corleonesi from Riina. In Ninety-two the fugitive number one was Totò Minore (head of the Trapani mafia, editor's note ) , who was one of the first to die in the war of the 1980s, but he was still being sought in the 1990s . "Only years later was it known that Minore had been killed in 1983.

CDG BUST LINKED TO BONANNO'S
Anti-mafia operation in Castellammare del Golfo (Trapani), police arrested 13 members of the local Cosa Nostra family on charges of mafia-type association, extortions and other crimes; 11 among politicians and public officials, included the mayor Nicola Rizzo, are under investigation for external mafia association. The investigation showed links with the Bonanno crime family of New York. In the latest years several Sicilian mafia members who live in the United States came to Sicily in order to meet the boss Francesco Domingo, arrested in the blitz.
new pact signed between the Sicilian mafia and the USA June 16, 2020 Thirteen arrests in what is called the ‘fiefdom’ of the mafia’s red primula Matteo Messina Denaro. Arrested Francesco Domingo, considered very close to the fugitive boss since 1993, also investigated the mayor of Castellammare del Golfo (Trapani) Nicola Rizzo and two former councilors of the same town. The operation of the Trapani police has been underway since this morning and is the culmination of the investigation conducted by the Palermo District Anti-Mafia Directorate; the charges against the arrested are of mafia-type association, extortion, theft, aiding and abetting, special surveillance and more, all crimes aggravated by the mafia method. Eleven people were reported, while dozens of searches were carried out from dawn by the carabinieri with the support of naval, air and specialized units such as the Hunters of Sicily Squadron, as well as dog units for the search for weapons. The investigations, coordinated by the chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, the deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido and the deputy prosecutors Gianluca De Leo and Francesca Dessì, reads a note, “have allowed to disarticulate the mafia family of Castellammare del Golfo, which despite the disagreements Interiors, the convicted Francesco Domingo, nicknamed Tempesta, already sentenced to 19 years in prison for mafia-type association and other and returned to freedom in March 2015, firmly sees the top. The mafia family of Castellammare del Golfo, joined to that of Alcamo after the first mafia war which saw the supremacy of the Corleonesi, had been reconstituted in 1993 “and the regency was entrusted to Gioacchino Calabrò, later, as judgedly ascertained, Domingo had inherited the regency from 1997 until 2004, continuing to exercise his power for some years also from inside the prison ». “The same sentence with which he was convicted at the time had also ascertained that Domingo had played the role of intermediary between Cosa Nostra and a criminal organization operating in Sardinia and this because Giovanni Brusca and Matteo Messina Denaro had planned some retaliatory acts against prison guards, â€investigators say. Francesco Domingo in the past would have organized a summit “then actually happened†between Gaspare Spatuzza and the ‘red primula’ Matteo Messina Denaro. At the time both were in hiding, while Messina Denaro still is. During the meeting, “the decisions on the custody of weapons available to the mafia families of Trapani were madeâ€. “The investigations of the carabinieri – continues the note – have shown that, even after having served the long prison sentence, since his release, Domingo had immediately summarized the role of head of the family and that he had a large group of acolytesâ€. The position covered by Tempesta was recognized unanimously also by the joints of the Cosa Nostra: he was in fact interested by Francesco Virga, the top of the mafia mandate of Trapani, already arrested in the operation of the Scrigno carabinieri and today reached by a new order of precautionary custody in prison for mafia association and extortion, to force, in competition with the arrested Diego Angileri, a farmer from Castellammare di Puglia to sell a vast plot of land that led to the districts of Marsala. The investigation also revealed the existence of a new mafia pact between the fugitive bosses of the fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro and affiliates residing in the United States. Francesco Domingo is considered by investigators to be the top authority among the Trapani mafia joints, and also recognized in the United States of America where ‘cells’ of Cosa Nostra have long been installed and developed. “There have been numerous visits, intercepted by the bugs and cameras of the carabinieri, by mafia members of the Italian-American Bonanno family from New York who updated the chief of the Castellammare mafia of the dynamics and balances of Cosa nostra overseasâ€. But the American mobsters “also asked Domingo for permission to speak with other exponents of Alcamo’s mandate, pleaded the causes of acquaintances at home, as well as conveyed messages between Domingo and the associates in America.†Exactly with reference to the relationship with Cosa Nostra from the United States, Domingo met the investigators, also in the summer of 2018, also the boss of Sciacca (Agrigento) Accursio Dimino, then arrested in November last year, and subsequently his emissaries.

so who r the bonannos involved in this investigation. looks like the bonannos r expanding there reach and re connecting w/ sicily. Ive heard of Diminio, Gucciardi, Turriciano..... I know on the DAY of Frank Calis death he was supposed to meet with, and do business with Accursio Dimino, boss of Sciacca. Does it list the NY Bonnanos who went to Sicily, if so could you provide the link, or name them... Never mind, I'm pretty familiar with all this.... Dimino and his attempts to join an American family.. @Hollander, what do you know about connections between America and the " Super Madamento" of Patanico and Camporeale?

The Mandate consists of the gangs of Camporeale, San Giuseppe Jato, Monreale, Borgetto, Montelepre, Giardinello, Altofonte and Partinico. However the last I read about the US links with Partinico was about 10 years ago there was a war between Partinico and Borgetto well before the formation of this supermandamento. It involved the Giambrone-Nania family, a lot of traveling back and forth they even went to New York for the 'baptism' of one of their relatives. The territory is also crucial for Matteo Messina Denaro.
