Syracuse, 27 arrests for drug trafficking and extortions
(ANSA) - SYRACUSE, 03 SEPT - The mobile squad and the carabinieri of Syracuse have carried out an order issued by the investigating magistrate of Catania which led to the arrest of 27 people close to the Bottaro-Attanasio clan for criminal association in order to commit drug trafficking and extortions, after an investigation by the Dda. The investigation, called "Demetra", discovered the drug dealing activity of two criminal groups from 2016 to 2019 and allegedly carried out extortions aggravated by the mafia method. The investigations made it possible to clarify the mechanism used by the two groups to sell was well underway and capable of regenerating itself even following the numerous arrests of " pusher ", say the investigators. -------- HI m2w, I see that you closely follow whats doing with the mafia in Italy and Sicily. I usually focus more on the activities in the United States with the exception of the Castellammare del Golfo and Trapanese coscas. Several months back I actually wrote an extensive expose' on their cosca tracing its history into the U.S. and back again. If you have any new knowledge of their cosca (or little known older history), activities, or both, by all means post it up. I find all their provinces and Families interesting but CDG is of singular interest to me. I appreciate any "intel" you could supply me with, because this project of mine is ongoing. In a perfect world I'd like to periodically update my storyline and keep current on this Family and town. Thanks agains for your anticipated input. Best regards, "The Other Guy"

Salvatore Milano , known as Totuccio, the boss of central Palermo, returns to prison . The financiers of the Economic - Financial Police Unit of the Guardia di Finanza of Palermo, in the context of investigations coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Public Prosecutor's Office, have executed the order of the Court of Palermo - Section for Review, which restores the precautionary measure of custody in prison, in relation to the crime of extortion aggravated by the mafia method.
The measure of pre-trial detention was confirmed last September 4 by the Court of Cassation, in acceptance of the appeal of the Public Prosecutor's Office - Dda against the order of the investigating judge which on December 23, at the request of the defense, had granted him in Milan house arrest with electronic bracelet.
The disputed facts date back to the years 2016 and 2017, when the investigations of the Gico financiers made it possible to ascertain the role of Milan regarding an extortion request committed against a well-known commercial activity in the historic city center. In the same procedure, in May 2018, Luigi Salerno and Giuseppe Bosco had already been arrested for other extortionate events.
The sum of between 500 and 1,000 euros was requested as a "repair", necessary to obtain the authorization to carry out trade in the territory of the Porta Nuova district and thus avoid damage and retaliation.
Milano is a historic man of honor belonging to the mafia family of Palermo Center in which he played, among other things, the role of "cashier" of the families of the Porta Nuova mafia district, providing for the sustenance of mafia exponents detained or recently released from prison.
He had already been arrested and definitively convicted by the Palermo Court of Appeal for mafia association following the “Perseo†operation, during which the first attempt to rebuild the Cosa Nostra provincial commission of Palermo was discovered.

Sicilian mafia boss serving life sentence 'eats guard's finger' in jail fight Guiseppe Fanara was serving a life sentence when he bit off and swallowed a guard's finger By Our Foreign Staff 8 September 2020 • 4:35pm A Sicilian mafia boss serving a life sentence bit off and swallowed a prison guard's finger during an altercation, an Italian news report said on Tuesday. Guiseppe Fanara, 60, who was serving a life sentence at Rome's Rebibbia prison, attacked seven guards in June when they came to inspect his cell, the daily Il Messagero reported. Mr Fanara, from Sicily's notorious Cosa Nostra clan, was nine years into his sentence under Italy's tough "41-bis" penal code reserved for mafia members. The harsh prison regime isolates mobster bosses entirely to prevent them from running their clans from behind bars. "During the altercation he (Fanara) bit off the agent's little finger on his right hand," the paper said. "The finger disappeared, leading a Rome prosecutor to conclude it had been eaten," it added. The prisoner then charged the six other guards, using a broomstick as a weapon, allegedly shouting "I'll slit your throats like pigs!" Mr Fanara has since been transferred to Sardinia's high-security Sassari prison, the paper said, adding he was facing new charges including aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Earlier this year Italy decided to release elderly and infirm mobster bosses - including some belonging to the influential Cosa Nostra. That decision sparked an outcry, forcing the justice ministry to backpedal and review the release decision. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/20...erving-life-sentence-eats-guards-finger/

The police in Catania seized five real estate assets for a value of about 350 thousand euros from the boss Alfio Santangelo.
Santangelo, 67 years old, called 'U' taccuni ', is considered the head of the homonymous mafia clan, an articulation of the Santapaola-Ercolano clan, which operates in Adrano, Paternò and Biancavilla.
According to the accusation, the boss, although detained in prison for long periods, would have continued to give orders and criminal strategies to the associates, always maintaining command of the group.

Over eighty years in prison were requested by the prosecutors of the DDA of Palermo, before the Court of Marsala, in the trial of eight of the 16 people involved in the anti-mafia operation "Pionica "of 12 March 2018 .
The most severe sentence (20 years in prison) was requested for Salvatore Crimi, 62, the alleged boss of Vita (Tp). Thirteen years, on the other hand, was the request for Ciro Gino Ficarotta, 68, of San Giuseppe Jato (Pa), and 12 years for Michele Gucciardi, 67, presumed mafia boss of Salemi, already sentenced to 14 years and 4 months in the context of the "Ermes" trial.

20 arrests as racket victims report Palermo extortion Business owners break wall of silence after years of paying out (ANSA) - PALERMO, OCT 13 - Italian police on Tuesday made 20 arrests after protection racket victims in Palermo spoke out after years of silence and reported their mafia extortionists. Twenty bosses, clan members and Mob enforcers were arrested by Carabineri after shopkeepers in Palermo's Borgo Vecchio district rebelled against the extortion rackets. They have been placed under investigation for mafia association, conspiracy to traffic drugs, rob and received stolen goods, attempted aggravated homicide, extortion and damages. Police have established more than 20 episodes of extortion by the Cosa Nostra racketeers, judicial sources said. Some 13 of these cases were uncovered after victims spoke out, police said. In a further five cases victims said they had been forced to pay the Mob after being called in by investigators. Police said breaking the wall of silence was an "extraordinary result" in a district where fear had allowed Cosa Nostra to enforce a blanket control of businesses. Most of the arrests were among the Borgo Vecchio mafia clan but the 'mandamento' of Porta Nuova was also implicated, police said. Among those arrested was the acting boss of the Borrgo Vecchio clan, Angelo Monti. Monti was released from prison three years ago and had gone back to his lead role in the family, police said. https://www.ansa.it/english/news/ge...bd518ec-cdab-4c19-b1da-bdc3acda3d2e.html

United States of Cosa Nostra According to the FBI, there are almost more Mafia members in America today than in Palermo. They are "new" men of honor, arrived from Sicily, without any connection with the ancient families told by the cinema (and without even their strength). Yet, the historian Salvatore Lupo explains to "IL", that criminal tradition and that way of representing oneself continues to constitute, for them, a totem with which to deal https://www.ilsole24ore.com/art/stati-uniti-cosa-nostra-ADX1Mjz

This would make more sense, so nowadays mafia members settling down in the US no longer establish connections with the US mob?

Matteo Messina Denaro would be the mastermind of the project to attack the former prosecutor Nino Di Matteo. The new justice collaborator Alfredo Geraci would have revealed this to the magistrates of Palermo. Geraci, 41, a member of the Mafia Family from Porta Nuova (a district of Palermo), decided to collaborate with the Italian justice system. He is presented as a trusted man of Alessandro D'Ambrogio, Geraci had notably managed the racketeering in the Ballaro district of Palermo. He notably told the magistrates that he had loaned the apartment in which a mafia “summit†had been organized in December 2012. His boss D'Ambrogio had revealed to him that during this "summit", the request of Matteo Messina Denaro (main mafia boss still on the run, "reigning" over the west of Sicily) had been discussed to eliminate the Prosecutor Nino Di Matteo ( photo below ), in particular in charge of the case of negotiations between part of the Italian State and Cosa Nostra (" trattativa ") and now member of the Superior Council of Magistracy. Were present at this meeting: Vito Galatolo (former boss of the Acquasanta district), who came especially from Venice;Tonino Lipari, a man from the Porta Nuova neighborhood and D'Ambrogio's trusted man; Tonino Lauricella, head of the Villabate family; Giuseppe Fricano, regent of mandamento of Resuttana. Geraci was present to ensure the entry of the apartment to the bosses. As a result, a stock of 150 kilos of explosives had been sent from Calabria and Messina Denaro had provided an explosives "expert". The charge was to be placed in front of the Palermo Palace of Justice or in front of the magistrate's house. D'Ambrogio's arrest slowed down and the project then Galatolo was arrested and decided to collaborate by evoking this project.
