I've been away from the GBB for months due primarily to family reasons and had no idea about Saul. I am just numb.
I had the pleasure of meeting Saul several times, the first being back in February, 2006. There is a thread called A Motley Crew that features that memorable GBB "sit-down" and will always stick in my mind for being a great evening, plain and simple. Saul and I were Brooklyn characters - he lived for a number of years not too far from where I lived.
I last saw him a couple of years ago when he was hospitalized. He was happy to see me and we had a good talk for around a half-hour or so. Problem was, he later told me he was on so much medication he barely remembered my visit! I tried to contact him last Summer when I found myself in the Catskill Region but only got his voicemail. I had no idea his already-bad health had taken such a turn.
I count myself lucky to have known him personally, but, even so, I wish I could have known him better. A number of people have met and become friends due to the GBB, but when people live scattered all over the place, in-person socializing becomes next-to-impossible.
I guess I'm rambling... but I am absolutely heartbroken.
R.I.P. my friend.

My dear friend, always such a comfort, always so witty, so funny. Never let on that he was sad or lonely. He was a lovely, funny, kind man who always had a hug and a ready ear.
When we first met back in NJ many years ago, some of the group had made a day trip to the track (including SC), and one of the horses had actually died. SC was recounting the tale, as only he could, getting a smile and laugh out of what would have been a sad circumstance. We told him that the last time we had been to the track, we ate dinner at one of the nicer restaurants there. We walked up to the reservations desk and they asked our last name. My husband gave it to the maitre d, who, despite the fact that we had NOT made a reservation, took us to an excellent table overlooking the start./finish line. Well, right after we had our drinks delivered, the gentleman comes over to confirm our last name, and looked rather worried. My husband even showed ID. Well, it turned out that a doctor with the same last name had made a dinner reservation and they gave us his table. He was NOT happy, but they let us keep the table. From the flapping about of all the restaurant staff, we guessed that the doctor was going to bet WAY more than we were, and was also going to ring up a much higher dinner bill. Well, SC loved that story and afterwards he always referred to my husband as "the good doctor".
Rest in peace my friend, The good doctor and Babe wish you Godspeed.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! lol Whaddaya want me to do? Whack a guy? Off a guy? Whack off a guy? --Peter Griffin My DVDs | Facebook | Godfather Filming Locations

Lately the only time I check in on this forum has been to check my tally in the contest, and just now read the news about SC. I am so sorry for his family and will miss his stern, yet needed "guidance" for all of us. It is certainly a reality check to all of us, and a reminder of just how fragile our lives are. May he rest in peace.
I just went back and read the "The Night Before Christmas, Godfather Style" and as always, it made me smile.

Ah man, that's sad news.
It's been a long time since I've visited this site, and then today while at work, I just randomly felt like checking in, and I see this news.
Huge condolences to his family and friends.

Saul's birthday just popped up on my Facebook and, belatedly, I learned the news of his passing.
Very moved. Brought it all back: the personalities here, the misspent hours, the avatars. SC was and is indelibly Bogart: were I to watch Casablanca or The Maltese Falcon now, I'd think of him. The IRL pics of Saul when younger — the light, that Kodachrome texture — are like something out of a John Cassavetes movie.
A consigliere for sure, wartime and otherwise.
Love to all!
