Event (Public) Prohibition Starts (by SC)
The Volstead Act (the enforcement arm of the 18th Amendment - better known as "Prohibition") was put into law on this day in 1920. It prohibited the sale and manufacturing of all intoxicating liquors (anything containing more than ½ of 1% alcohol).

This law gave rise to the Mob's greatest money-making activities to date (bootlegging or manufacturing booze) and allowed them to make enough money to seriously influence and corrupt government officials through bribes.

It would be repealed some 13 years later.
Event (Public) Al Capone Born (by SC)
Al Capone was born this day in 1899; Brooklyn, NY.

Some 20 years later Capone moved to Chicago and soon became (arguably) the "best-known" mobster of the 20th century.

By the late 1920s Capone had earned $105 million in one year - an American record income that stood for many years.
