Aniello Dellacroce Dies (by SC)
On this day in 1985 Aniello Dellacroce, the former Underboss to Carlo Gambino, died from cancer in NYC.
Dellacroce was the second-in-command when Gambino died and it was assumed he'd take over the Family. Don Carlo (on his deathbed in 1976) instead installed his cousin, Paul Castellano, as the new Boss. This move angered a lot of the Family's crews but Dellacroce kept the soldiers in check by arguing that Gambino was the boss and everyone would have to abide by his dying wishes.
Once Dellacroce was dead there was nobody to soothe the angry soldiers who hated being under the control of Castellano. A group of those soldiers led by Capo John Gotti would take control of the Family two weeks later by killing Castellano.
