Birthday The Irish Mafia 28
Event (Public) Joe Colombo Shot (by SC)
Mobster Joe Colombo, boss of the NY Family bearing his name was shot at a rally for Italian/American pride in New York's Columbus Circle (59th Street and 8th Avenue) on this day in 1971. A new movie was being filmed about a ½ mile away that day about the Mafia. Its name? "The Godfather" (the scenes in which Mike and Kay were in bed in their hotel room were shot at the St. Regis Hotel that same day).

Colombo was bringing unwanted attention to the Mob through his Anti Defamation League's activities. The other mob bosses (especially Carlo Gambino, the top boss) didn't want that attention and its theorized they were behind the shooting.

Colombo didn't die immediately. He was in a coma and vegetative state for almost 7 years before he died in May, 1978.
