Just curious. It seems like the new generation really tries to distance themselves from Italian stereotypes. Many try so hard to not even seem interested in the mafia or being related to it's history.

Why?

If you are Italian you would think many more would aspire to be somewhat interested and even involved in the life. Instead they just ignore it.

Who wants to be associated with lowlifes? I applaud the Italian people for ignoring that part of their history

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away

It's human nature to gravitate towards whatever they think will benefit them. Regardless of ethnicity, if people see a quick way to get out of poverty or hard labor, they'll take it. Also, people in general want prestige, prestige is currency. The feeling of transforming from a nobody into a somebody is intoxicating, so regardless of race, people will always sign up to the gangster life. People can talk all this shit about morality, but it's all bullshit.

The younger generations probably thought it would be better to associate themselves with Jay Z, or Diddy,Bloods or Crips than to associate themselves with those old white men
And probably most of those with Italian surnames are not even predominately Italian
Not to mention no more Italian nerighborhoods and a disappearing and watering down of the culture

Those associations accomplished nothing but made them look like some wiggers, trend followers who can't even find Italy on a map lol. Go ahead and sag your pants, fa%s.

LOL

That stuff is even creeping into Italy. On You Tube try googling music about the mob there. A lot of the songs are like hip hop,the way they dress, the gestures, etc

Havana,

I couldn't stand that motherfucker in the Sopranos. He's exactly like the kids growing up today that have Italian last names!!! I've seen it time and time again first hand in real life.

So snobby in regards to who their ancestors were from Italy who came to this country and what they were involved in. Then making fun and smart ass comments in regards to the generations that came before them.

"How dare they act they way they do or did. Its insulting to Italians everywhere!"

Shut the fuck up!

Maybe in the USA, but I live close to a huge Southern Italian community including everything from expats to third generation Italians and there are still tons of young guys who fawn over the mob lol.

Speaking from side: is because over time the stereotype of the man from the south who is lazy, doesn't want to work, steals money from the state through various scams or if he has a job he does everything to work as little as possible and make others do his tasks has been born.
Then there is the version of the Omm miez a via (man of the street)who is self-made but who in reality is a man of straw who has become rich thanks to the underworld.
Of course he is ignorant, speaks only dialect, dresses tacky etc.

There is many good people that are honest but who made the headlines are the 18 years old that killed another guy because he crushed his foot and ruined his 500 euros shoe.

Im lucky that speak italian without accent so when worked in the north I avoid the distrust towards the Neapolitan who constantly shouts and gesticulates.

The more aggressive or "macho" men are, such as the mobsters ,the more their professorss would want them emasculated and ridiculed

And unlike the originals are not nearly as "hard" and come from a softer life and even if they never work a day in their life they likely won't worry about starving to death or being put out on the street.Povert now is notlike poverty back then.

Italy's crackdown on crime has little to do with cracking down on criminal gangs which the Italian state still backs lol.

Thats exactly right. Back then, THAT was poverty. By those standards, the 'poverty' experienced today -- at least here in America -- pales in comparison.

As coddled as these kids are and given trust funds by their parents, no fuckin way these kids would even last a fucking day running shit on the streets. Can you imagine one of these guys trying to collect $$$ from someone?

The only way you ever would get a kid who is spoiled and grows up in a white collar life to be somewhat beneficial is if they were one of those Menendez brothers types. A rich kid who is not afraid to blow someones head off with a shotgun.

There are kids who grow up privileged who still are capable of doing that type of stuff.

For a lot of people in the Western world these days "poverty" just means they're not able to spend €400 on a single Givenchy shirt, buy the newest iPhone every year, drive a luxury car and go on a yearly all-inclusive resort trip to the Maldives. Of course there are still many people experiencing true poverty and those people have my sympathy, but I've witnessed first hand there are also tons of people around who cry about being "disadvantaged" when in reality they just want all the nice and luxurious things in life without having to put the work in or having to deal with the risks of investing.

Thats the thing, way too many things they are addicted to now that would prevent them from being successful living the life of a hardcore mob guy or just a mob guy in general.

Lets break down some main reasons.........

1. No work ethic
2. Not able to follow rules
3. Not able to keep their mouth shut
4. Incapable of being able to use violence if called upon.
5. Too civilized.
6. Book smart but their street smarts are pathetic.

I don't think they distance themselves as much as few have any need to join, and don't know anyone in that life if they wanted to join. This is nothing new, I think it was always that way. When more were in poverty more became involved, as times changed it became different, Middle Class Black people rarely look to get into a gang, and if they tried they would be rejected or laughed at. The same goes for all races and ethnicities.

Thatt's true. Unless you live in a mafia infested area in NYC, where would somebody ever really get to meet a made guy? Not likely they'll ever come close to being near one

You know the more I think about it let's be honest even the guys that are in the life now would shit their pants if you transported them back 40 or 50 years ago around guys back then. The guys now have become soft!

Can you imagine them sitting in a car witnessing someone strangled and their throat cut ear to ear? They would have a mental breakdown. The guys now are not cut out for that shit.

Do guys even know how to whack someone if called upon anymore? I highly doubt theres a guy who knows how to properly dismember someone either. Back in the day that was a required qualification to be accepted into the life.

Do they still have the balls to operate in the dangerous neighborhoods of NYC?
What would they do if they had to operate in the Scampia area of Naples where Gomorrah was filmed ?

Why do Italians distance themselves from the mob ?

The same reason some muslims distance themselves from ISIS. The same reason Polish people distance themselves from jokes. The same reason Jews distance themselves from a check.
The same reason some Irish distance themselves from a bar ( lets not get crazy).

Whatever's left of the American Mafia should remain close to the real deal in Italy, because from what I've read there was an occasion where a Family forgot how to even conduct an initiation ceremony!

These guys nowadays are a real piece of work. Their rackets have gone from hardcore motherfuckers that own the cops and judges, to running half ass legit businesses and a diving into a little extortion if a guy owes them money. There is no threat of violence anymore and no one is willing to carry out a hit. There is no fear put in the minds of others. Back in the day if a mob guy walked into a restaurant for example, all heads turned to see him and peoples heart rates increased to 140 bpm. Nowadays most people don't even know who the fuck he is or care if he is in the same room.

The mob today is not once it once was. Is it even worth going to prison over? I do not think so.

Its boring and fucking in a state of desperation to remain active.

I think the better question is why would anyone join the mob today?
